Long needed update - Part 1, the career shift

Dec 27, 2009 09:31

Yes, yes... it has come around once again, that I am a complete slacker and have yet to fulfill my obligations of updating my words of the moment. It isn't that there hasn't been much for me to talk about, it's more along the lines that I just don't think to write about them. Purely selfish, I assure you. So herein lies some words of the life that ( Read more... )

So, what are you looking for in a new domicile?
What are you doing for fun these days?
What is your favorite thing about the DC area?
What will you miss most about your current residence?

Ahhh, the new domicile -
I'm not quite sure what I want to get. I'm toying around with detached homes and Townhouses. What I want to have in said house is a loft, and a fireplace. I'd like a garage, but I can be persuaded to forgo that if there is ample and easy to handle parking.

The big thing is the commute. I'd like to avoid 66 or at least a lot of it if possible. I'd like something that is decent commute-wise to work (Tyson's area) and I'd like to have something that is a step up or lateral when compared to my current house.

I found a neat website for doing the house-hunting called redfin.com. It actually allows for searching via keywords in addition to the normal criteria, plus it pops up all the homes on a map so you can look at it, but the super cool thing is that if you pan or zoom in/out on the map, it will update the list. It also gives a LOT more information than all of the other MLS sites I've seen, including the MLS history, and extra details. We'll see what I can find, but I'm open to suggestions.

Fun These ( ... )

MLS - Multiple Listing Service. This is what realtors will go to in order to see what other agencies have available. So, you may go through Long and Foster, but Coldwell actually is the selling agent... it's kind of a central repository for all real estate agencies.

The thing is, that as you start looking at something like Long and Foster, they limit what they show you in regards to the property. The realtor can see a lot more than the average schmo, and they also have various ways of doing the searching.

I've looked at a variety of sites to find what I like, and redfin is (so far) the best one. I'll also talk to a realtor (I've talked to one, Ruthanne has a friend that has made a kind offer in regards to the fees. Now all I have to do is get my finances in order and put in a bid or two. Ohh, and find something that I want to spend the next couple of years in.

Congratulations on the opportunity. Change can be good. I need to make a change too.

If you need to make a change, why don't you? What is it that really stops you? What would you change to? How would you do it? I tend to think that many of us are stuck in ruts of our lives because of fear, not because of the circumstances that we find ourselves in... The circumstances may hinder us, or delay us, but we can always find a way to work towards our dreams... even if taking some time to regroup is part of that process.

Ah. You ask a question which requires more space than LJ leaves for comments.

I'll write you sometime in the next few days; I've actually got time off til January 4th and lots of people to play catch up with. These last two weeks I have compressed the schedule so that I can get all my hours in 3 days which has given me 4 days off per week without losing money but it sure has kept me busy since Dec. 21st. !!

Watch for an email shortly.
