Geek: Skype is a perfect compliment to a cellphone

Dec 27, 2008 12:18

By calling my cellphone from skype I could ringolocate it deep inside the pocket, of the dress jacket, deep inside in the closet, forgotten after holiday festivities.  Thank goodness for decently charged battery as it's been close to a week since I last used it.

skype, cellphone, geek

I know about Skype but hesitate to use it because I'm worried about
the quality of voice.

it's cheap to try.

quality of skype to skype >> than cell to cell
quality of skype to landline varies from good to average based on factors I don't know. In generally people I call prefer talking to me on skype to landline than cell.

I would replace my cellphone with Skype + voicemail if I didn't drive.

The real fun is when you are abroad. You just find free wifi (found some every inch of paris) and make your international call using Skype credits. A bargain compared to the $1.20 a min roaming fees charged to make a regular call on your cell. Another thing that was great to have in Paris was GPS. My Tilt has GPS and I installed software which lets you steal a very large map (5000x5000 or more) from google map tiles. You just calibrate it with coordinates and you can use your phone GPS without a roaming data plan. In the US, Google maps is just as good. Misty and I used Google Earth to plot every single restaurant, museum and point of interested. Then I exported the data to my phone and it all overlaid on the map stored on my internal memory.

It's great being a geek.
