Hmm..if you'd like my input (and whether you want it or not, here it comes! :D), it could be that the child represents something you've lost (in the "lost childhood" sense, but probably not so literal) that you want to get back, or that you wish you could change, but since the outcome is ultimately the same, the end of the dream might be a subconcious kick in the pants saying you can't force change.
Or it could be yourself sensing some sort of self-destructive pattern without realizing it.
I'm fairly big on symbology in dreams. I'm also as big on the more scientific view. That is, thought/conscious brain functions on a fundemental level by associating the experiences it takes in. And that's saying it in a broad sense ;) In an unconscious state, the portion of the brain that "governs" structure and ~how~ said experiences are associated is in an inactive state ... during which more brain-functioning-power is diverted towards physical body maintenance
