I read the first and second link, and I don't see any problem with this bill at all. Actually, I agree with it. It's designed to prevent extremists from carrying out acts of violence. This country absolutely needs that. It specifically says that it takes Freedom of Speech, Religion, etc. into consideration, so I don't understand what part of that you have a problem with?

Sorry if I sound blunt, I wish I could put my thoughts into better words but I have a massive head ache which is making me very irritable.

The issue is the vague definition of a "homegrown terrorist". It's so open-ended that anyone from anti-war organizers who engage in civil disobedience to pro-life groups outside abortion clinics could be labeled as such. It's not even a left-right issue, it's a freedom of assembly/freedom of speech issue. I am pretty sure Bush would love to have more powers to spy, free of things like the right to privacy getting in the way, and this basically allows him to shut down his opposition by intimidation. It's wrong, and unAmerican.

BTW: What's your view on the Patriot Act?

I disagree completely. It clearly states that it takes things such as freedom of speech and assembly into consideration. This bill is basically a way for authorities to more freely investigate suspected terrorists within our own country -- I highly doubt protestors and individuals assembling to voice their thoughts will even be remotely considered, unless of course, they display violent acts of some kind. I think that people that are so concerned over their 'privacy' have something to hide. Honestly, I think that nowadays, it's completely necessary, especially since 9-11. I strongly believe that we need something like this in our country, to protect its citizens and crack down on terrorist plots before they even get the chance to strike. I'm so tired of hearing about this "It oppresses our civil/constitutional rights" nonsense. It's for the good of our country. How would you like if a devastating event like 9-11 occured again, and the government could've done something to prevent it, had this law been passed? I could care ( ... )
