My new hobbie

Many times have I gone to SCA events and people seem to want to get dressed up and get their middle eastern groove on.  I've always thought it was fun and I wanted to join in on the party.  Most of these middle eastern parties seem to have the men drumming (cause it's manly to beat on things) while the women dance (usually they wear these skimpy ( Read more... )

That's awesome! Good for you to take that step and not back down from nay-sayers. I look forward to seeing you dance. ;-)

Hey.. I know that he doesn't play much anymore but Baron Duryn the Red is a very good middle eastern dancer and teaches. You might contact some people out in Altavia and see if they can put you in touch with him. Just thinking

Nifty!

One avenue for teaching you may want to pursue is the non-SCA middle eastern dance troupes. We have them here in MN, so I have to assume you have a ton more out there in Hollyweird :p Some of them will be purely entertainment, but others may be very focused on the actual art and be able to help you learn without the burden of the SCA mindset. Good luck!

That's good, though many of those type people do a more modern middle eastern male belly dancing. I might find something but most of my experience is it's like going to an olympic fencing studio to learn Capo Ferro. It's still going to have to be distilled quite a bit.

Oh, also I have a good number of friends who are not apart of the normal Celtestany crowd. Good friends (women) who would be happy to drum for me as well as those who would be interested in new things. I have no problem with having a suportive group just that I am undertaking perhaps a totally new project.

Word, good for you. talk to Eli, she has worked with many male middle eastern dancers before and may be able to find some contact info for you.

I will try to get some names for you as there are plenty of good male dancers out there.

For more classical dance, I would look at Jim Boz and John Compton. I think Jim is in either the LA or SD area.

I am currently interested in the more modern Tribal Fusion style, for which Frank Farinaro is the best male dancer I know of.

I'll see what I can find for you later this week.

BTW, is any of the White Star going to be at KWAR?

I don't know about KWAR. There's a small possibility that you might find Giacomo there but most of us are trying to either raise a family or deal with hard economic times.
