One avenue for teaching you may want to pursue is the non-SCA middle eastern dance troupes. We have them here in MN, so I have to assume you have a ton more out there in Hollyweird :p Some of them will be purely entertainment, but others may be very focused on the actual art and be able to help you learn without the burden of the SCA mindset. For more classical dance, I would look at Jim Boz and John Compton. I think Jim is in either the LA or SD area.
I am currently interested in the more modern Tribal Fusion style, for which Frank Farinaro is the best male dancer I know of.
I'll see what I can find for you later this week.
BTW, is any of the White Star going to be at KWAR?
