I missed you. A lot. I missed hanging out here and squeeing! and pointing out the obvious and being fannish even though my fannish mojo is still kinda stuck in the mud. Please bear with me.
On a personal level I did little more than pay off a couple bills, lose 10 pounds before the holidays, transfer to another department at work shortly before Christmas, gain 5 pounds during the holidays, act like a flake when someone very sweet wanted to meet up with me in February, register for super-dooper beginner Biology with an eye towards becoming a nurse before I turn 50 and routinely freaking out with the hope of at least burning a few calories. Apparently not spending huge amounts of time on the internet doesn't have the same proactive effect for me that it does for you all. Please share your secret.
I did, however, manage to do a few other things that don't quite cut it as progress but that didn't stop me from enjoying them:
- Rented Devour just to watch Jensen Ackles's mouth work around a shot glass. Uh huh ...
- Became absolutely enamored with Emile Hirsch and Cillian Murphy. Seriously, rent anything they're in and you won't regret it. I especially love Hirsch in The Mudge Boy and Murphy in Breakfast On Pluto. Watch how their characters become incandescent the more they become themselves.
- Read the first two volumes of Raised by Wolves - twice. Not since Jack and Ennis have I had characters take up residence in my head long after I closed the book. Although the writing is very different the characters of Will and Gaston are just as vivid and emotionally engaging. I was expecting a nice diverting story about pirates but there is so much more to it. W.A. Hoffman writes about not only finding love but also learning to accept it, what love can heal and what it can't, the way insanity is a completely rational response to violence and the way isolation can be used to punish or restore. The third of four volumes is suppose to be out any day now and if it's not already obvious then let me tell you that I'm waiting for it none too patiently. In the meantime there's a Yahoo!Group with the disorienting and repetitive messaging system and a thoughtfully named LJ comm at chocolata_hole. Enjoy!
- Bought Devour just to watch Jensen Ackles's mouth work around a shot glass.
- Rekindled my interest in Torchwood with the second season. It feels odd to love a show that has messed with the Jack/Ianto dynamic as much as they have but they've also opened many a door for all kinds of good (and not so good) speculation. And apparently I'm not the only one who feels that way. Not since Rome with it's seemingly unequal partnership between Pullo and Vorenus has a relationship been so hotly debated and scrutinized. Is Ianto Jack's "part-time shag" and Jack an as*ho*e or are we underestimating Ianto's wheedles and Jack's intentions? There's plenty of evidence for either argument which can be kind of fun and also kind of Stop it! C'mon! Much love for Gareth David-Lloyd this season. It's like Ianto suddenly has a body and a will to knock you down and a booming voice and in and around all of that is this core of emotion that he just lets rip. John Barrowman has taken some sharp criticism for indulging in stage acting but I don't see any of that in his scenes with David-Lloyd. I only recently watched the handful of episodes of Dr. Who that he was in and I could not get over what a happy, bouncy character he was and how much he's been through to change all that. I can't think of another show where despite the best of intentions the characters fail at saving the day almost as often as they do save the day. It makes for some very interesting viewing. I still have a question about the season finale: Tosh? Why??? ::hands::
- Started stories for M7, Torchwood and Tour of Duty although the Tour of Duty one is the only one that has survived the light of day - and even that one I took apart, reassembled (kinda) and then ... stalled. Me and writing are in a grudge match.
- And! I'm currently obsessively watching and rewatching the preview videos for the film Shelter with Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright. It's being tagged as the "gay surfer movie" but I think they should tag it as the movie where the guys look at each other like this. Good lord! Ask me how much I love Trevor Wright's face. I'll tell you. Sooo much! I love a face that is built stern/sad. All those dark good looks in perfectly straight lines. Straight brow, straight nose, straight mouth. It's the kind of face that you don't know if he's happy or not until he smiles outright and then ... it's like the sun coming out from behind the clouds. Beeeuuutiful! The film is making a quick run through the art house circuit and then will be shown on the here! network on April 18th. The DVD is scheduled to come out on May 27, my first day of school. I'm either going to take the day off from work or skip school. Something's gotta give so I can watch this film, dammit, and work is looking like the likely casualty.
