I have had a 99 subaru legacy ltd for 5-6 years now and it's amazing. These days, it's getting old, but it has over 200,000 miles on it. I lived in the U.P. for 4 years and I can't imagine having driven anything else to get through that weather. Subaru wagon + good snow tires = unstoppable.

Funny! I'm looking for an Impreza Wagon Outback too! Preferably a '98.

You may also want to consider looking at the Legay Wagon and Legacy Outback (1997-2005) because they share the same 2.5L engine, so they have very similar gas mileage.

The Suzuki Esteem Wagon is also a good little car with the best gas mileage in it's class and a very similar look to the '98 Impreza wagons.

Some other things to consider;

Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe are the same car. They are built on a Carola frame. Vibes are generally cheaper.

Ford Focus and Mazda3 are basically the same with the 3's frame being a little better. Ford commissioned Mazda to build its Focus'. The Focus is significantly cheaper.

Volvos I think are a little pricey for what you get. They don't do AWD as well as Subaru or Audi.

There really aren't a lot of good wagons being made anymore. Mostly glorified 5-door hatchbacks. :(

We have a pontiac vibe and I love it. It's incredibly roomy (can sleep/camp comfortably in it and we're almost 6 feet tall - the front and back seats fold down (and bi-fold so you can still fit a passenger and a giant 8 ft log or 9 ft board in while driving).
It handles fine in the snow - which we get a ton of here in MN. Being a lightweight car it's not the *best* in snow - I had an old grand am that was like a rock when it came to snow driving - have to be more careful with the vibe when unloaded because it can skid - but then again we dont use snow tires, just all-weather and that would probably make a big difference.
It gets great gas mileage, is very comfortable even for large/tall people and back seat passengers, and is an all around nice car. :) Would recommend!
