I once ran a 'Buddhism and Conflict in Sri Lanka' conference (in England). Which was strange enough on its own. Made worse by the fact that we had to employ a special security task force in case of any targeted attacks. Made even worse when, by pure coincidence, a car exploded right next to the venue, after a car thief abandoned it and set it on fire.
I have a vague memory of making conversation with a nice Buddhist monk, when over his shoulder I saw a huge plume of smoke. I politely excused myself (somehow he didn't notice) and legged it down the hill toward the explosion (strange reaction, i realise). Meanwhile the security guys were also legging it. They cornered the 15 year old thief in the corner of a field, behind some cows. Needless to say, he adamantly denied being a terrorist.
