Our World: Super Size Super Power - a BBC documentary shown at 5.20 in the morning, on their 24-hour news channel.

If a Martian were to watch the programme without sound, I think it[1] would conclude that black people are fat; white people are thin. I'm sure that's not the intended message, but it does seem to give that impression ( Read more... )

I don't really have much to add but I found your take on the BBC's educational programming interesting. We don't receive any TV signal and it was only a few weeks ago that we realized the iPlayer existed so I haven't had the pleasure of seeing much of it yet.

Anyway, it's nice to hear a different perspective on the BBC - most of my American friends tend to worship it blindly as the holy grail of journalism and good programming and use it to argue that all British people are waaaay more informed and educated than Americans. And while to some degree I agree that the BBC is far superior to, say, CNN, I don't think my friends realize that a heck of a lot of British people mainly just read the Sun and watch Sky TV, which amounts to much the same thing as Americans who read The USA Today and watch Fox News.
