Creativity is not valued at my work place.

Neither is inventiveness, ingenuity, or independent thought. If it is not the same thing that everyone else is doing, or the way things have always been done, then it shouldn't be done, even if it leads to better customer service. That's what I was told, anyway.

Yes, there's a story...a very small story, and kind of a stupid one, but it was the principle of the thing that got to me. See, as a cashier on night shift, we are responsible for both running our registers and cleaning the front end of the store. This means that we are away from our lanes a lot while we are cleaning. You know those little bells they have at customer service desks and the like? I brought one in and put it on my lane with a note asking anyone who comes up to my lane to ring the bell and I will be right with them. That way I could be cleaning and not have to go around and look at my lane every five seconds to make sure that there was nobody waiting to check out, which both made me more productive and made the people coming through my lane get faster service (as they did not have to wait for me to notice them). Our only other alternative is having another cashier notice that someone is on your lane and yell for you, which is not very pleasant. However, apparently I am not allowed to have my bell (this was said ( ... )

it took two months for them to complain? honestly, i think that's past the commentary point. but *I* like your ingenuity.

makes me think of Hilary and the "sorry" bell at Borders.

Hee, thanks. Borders has a "sorry" bell? Or does this have something to do with Hilary's relationship with the word sorry?
