He looks lovely, doesn't he?
I read in my early costume history research days that this style of hat is called an escoffion, but a recent web search produced totally conflicting results.
I begin to think that it's just about impossible to get clearly defined terms for various antiquated garments, since what we have are words like "coif" which was probably originally short for something like "hair covering" since it has the same root as the modern French for hairstyle:coiffure.
Escoffion has that root in it too, so for all we know, it may be a 14th century European word for "hat" or "hair cover" rather than for this specific type of hat.
Ain't it funny how we get all hooked on what we were FIRST told as the truth?
The pronunciation of the word "Chiton", for example.
or or once I heard
I know which one *I* think it is - but that's only because my first costume history prof said it that way, so that's the first way I heard it, therefore, it is obviously *RIGHT* :)
