I can't remember the last time I lovehated a fandom so, so much. Thanks to going through all the vicissitudes in Popslash, everything else just seems a little, IDK, naive? Can you even call yourself part of a fandom when you like very, very specific things about the source material very much, and not the other parts at all ( Read more... )

For me, the most important part of whether I'd call myself 'in a fandom' isn't about the source material, but whether I engage with the rest of the fandom. Otherwise, it's just a show I like.

I cannot understand the tumblr. I think I'm too old, now.

I'm in tumblr and I have no idea how it works. I feel like it's shouting into space and hoping someone might echo your scream, but no one ever answers. I have no idea why it's the new fannish thing.

(as a result, even if I love Supernatural and am writing fics for it? I can't call myself as part of the fandom. I am at best orbiting around it)

Naive! That's exactly right! I definitely find myself browsing around in non-popslash fandoms with a patronizing, "Aw, how cute, bless their dear little hearts" kind of attitude. Thank you so much for perfectly articulating a thought I've had many, many times!
