Compare that to something like, say, the Quran, which completely, intentionally, blatantly, contradicts itself (and even acknowledges it) though.
It's just not even in the same realm. Yeah, there's a few issues that don't have perfect clarity... but not something so essential as the pathway to salvation which isn't even covered in the Quran.
First of all, dang. I didn't know anyone payed attention to LJ anymore. Hey Brandon. :D
Okay, two quick things here before, cause I'm much more interested in what you shared below! I don't know a lot about the Quran, but if they Quran has more overt contradiction than the Old and New Testaments, it's not evidence of anything. I understand you mean to create a context, but each religion should really be judged on its own merits.
Secondly, the contradictions that I refer to aren't about whether Jesus rode on one or two mules on Palm Sunday. And while I won't get into it here, I just want you to know that I don't think it's a simple as a few issues not having "perfect clarity." These are issues that shook the foundation of my faith at a time when I didn't really want to let go.
I have a lot of thoughts I'd love to share with you over lunch or something, but since we probably won't get to do that anytime soon, I'll give a brief overview here, just for future reference when we can get together
( ... )
Thanks a lot for sharing, Brandon! I really enjoyed reading this. I'm glad you're finding purpose in life without actively searching for it. I guess that's the best way to find it sometimes, eh? Perhaps the less free time you have, the more you come to appreciate each moment? The more you appreciate the brevity of this life.
We all have our bad habits, so the more we can distract ourselves, the better, in a way. And anything that makes you appreciate human life more is definitely something to hold on to. I'm glad you've found all of this!
That 80% figure is fascinating; I'll have to look into it. My guess right now is that percentage is a very flexible number...I bet it could be anything from 50-90%. And I bet that most of that life is either sea-life or microbes. There's a large part of the earth that we still haven't explored, technically.. ^^
