The first things he sees are the stars.
They shine and glimmer as tiny dots high above him in the dark sky. His subconscious thinks he should be worrying about why he's looking up at those stars and why he feels so light and disorientated, but instead he finds himself remembering what he'd told Amy just after their encounter with the weeping angels.
He's seen those stars hundreds of times and he knows he's been a witness to both the birth and death of most of them. Having all of time and space as his backyard was all good and well in theory, but the reality was that after a while, that wonder and awe and astonishment diminished.
But companions, well they see everything for the very first time with excitement and refreshing exuberance and that brings back the spark of vitality to the Doctor's hearts. They keep him from feeling his age, keep him from growing up.
"Doctor? Doctor!"
Small rocks and stones scatter their way down a slope and clatter next to him (some falling on him) as his latest two make their way to his side. Rory's face enters his line of vision, but curiously, it’s upside down.
"It's alright, Doctor, we're here now. Just lie still."
"Stupid mad man." Amy's voice snips above him, but he can make out its more in relief than true irritation. Her face comes into his line of sight as Rory moves back. "Just had to go and fall off a cliff, didn't you? Well, guess what?"
Amy leans over him and kisses his forehead while stroking the side of his head with her thumb.
"Gotcha."
He finds himself smiling and murmurs back with tired eyes, "Gotcha..."
