"No matter how careful you are, there's going to be the sense you missed something, the collapsed feeling under your skin that you didn't experience it all. There's that fallen heart feeling that you rushed right through the moments where you should've been paying attention."
"Who's that?"
"Hmm? Who's who?"
He watches Amy closely as she seems to stare up at the hills around them at something, something in particular. He watches her closely as she turns her head away and...
"Sorry, what?"
She forgets.
He knows she forgets because he knows that she really did see something. He knows exactly what she's seen and why she's forgotten she saw anything. He knows the monster and he knows exactly what it’s capable of and he knows they've been there from the very beginning.
He knows because for him, it's already happened and the memories are so clear, so fresh in his mind and for a moment, he feels the rising need to tell them and to warn them of what's waiting for them on the path ahead.
"What did you see? You said you saw something."
"No I didn't."
But he doesn't. He can't. He didn't invite them to warn them. He invited them to set them on the road, to see them on their way. Whatever happens in the meantime is something they need to discover for themselves and he could not interfere in that. Just as they could not interfere in what came next.
