Just curious...

I was reading stories by mylodon, and I started wondering. When you read (and/or write) Hornblower fic, especially H/A slash fic, do you identify with Archie or Horatio more? Or do you *not* identify with any character ( Read more... )

fandom thoughts, hornblower

I don't necessarily identify with either of them. But to some extent it depends on when it's set. I'm more likely to identify with Horatio if it's an HH1 story, the older the character gets the more alien to me his way of thinking becomes. Archie on the other hand I think I'm more likely to identify with in his more mature phase, when he seems to be thinking a bit more about things. I don't think though that's necessarily reflected in my writing POV

I don't identify with Horatio in all scenarios - I tend to do that when he's not being a Mary Sue (because I don't even like him when he's a MS) amd when he's plainly in love with Archie. Maybe I just prefer to admire Archie as someone who loves him a lot?

I have things in common with both of them, but I identify more with Archie - probably because it's easier for me to imagine myself as the more down to earth sidekick than the heroic Mary Sue leader type. I can't see other people reacting to me like they do to Horatio.

Hmm, I think the Horatio I identify with is the Horatio in I'm-so-in-love-with-Archie mode, not the one in Mary Sue mode. Yes, I have at least two almost-separate Horries in my mind! :P While his heroic Mary Sue-ness annoys the hell out of me (which explains why I can't enjoy Examination for Lieutenant AT ALL), he's very sweet and adorable when he's alone with Archie, and is simply a man in love.
