A/N: My study-addled brain was screaming for a break. Peruse at your own peril. You’ve been warned.
It was happening again.
‘Hephaistion! What is it?’
Long hair brushed against Alexander’s over-sensitized skin and Hephaistion, who lay across him, shook his head fiercely and continued trailing kisses down the King’s chest and stomach. But Alexander was not fooled. He watched like a hawk and before long, Hephaistion’s eyes rose again to glance furtively first to the left and then to the right side of the headboard. His attempt to mask what he was doing with a clever trick of his tongue did not quite work as he had intended. Alexander gasped, unable to deny himself the pleasure, but the next moment he sat up, seizing Hephaistion’s shoulders and forcing him level with him.
‘What in Hades is the matter with you? You’re throwing these looks around as if someone were ready to gut us both.’
Hephaistion sighed and his shoulders sagged in defeat.
‘Are you distracted?’ Alexander quirked an eyebrow, only half-joking. ‘Lie down and let me take over. I promise to make you forget about it - whatever it is. And I won’t lose concentration either,’ he added pointedly.
‘No, no,’ Hephaistion protested rather weakly, his palms going up in defense. But drawn almost against his will, his eyes wandered again and this time Alexander spun around, following his gaze.
He soon discovered the root of Hephaistion’s woes: the two massive golden statues - female Egyptian deities whose purpose Alexander remembered vaguely - which adorned both ends of the headboard. Their cold, black-rimmed eyes pinioned the occupants of the bed with unsettling dispassion.
‘I could swear they’re watching,’ Hephaistion griped, ‘and by Herakles’ balls, I’m not used to an audience.’
Alexander’s laughter was raucous and contagious, taking Hephaistion over and they doubled up until their jaws and their stomachs hurt from the effort.
‘And here I was thinking you were losing interest..,’ Alexander chuckled when he had regained some of his breath.
‘You should know better,’ Hephaistion gave him a blank look.
‘Well this is Egypt after all, and their Gods are different from ours. I can’t imagine you being intimidated by any statue in the palace at Pella.’
Hephaistion blushed deliciously, memories of the carefree, often naughty days of their youth creeping into his mind. ‘No, I don’t suppose you can.’
Alexander fell silent for a moment then suddenly leapt upwards, his feet on the bed. ‘Well, since blindfolding you is out of the question, the only thing left to do….’
With fluid, economical moves, Alexander stripped the bedding and hung one sheet over each of the nosy goddesses’ eyes. With that done, he sat down next to his chuckling lover with an expression of sheer accomplishment on his face.
‘So now, where were we?’
And for as long as Alexander slept in the pharaoh’s bedroom, no one dared to remove the sheets from the statues’ heads.
