Who do you look up to?

Alternately, up to whom do you look?

I find it interesting that the responses so far suggest a lack of contemporary role models and mentors. Is this because there isn't anyone whose life we consider exemplary? Or, is it a mark of cynicism, in that we can't let ourselves believe that anyone today is worthy of putting on a pedestal, however briefly ( ... )

This may be a strange response.
Two people come immediately to mind. One is a borderline friend/acquaintance of mine who seems to have everything I've ever wanted, in terms of opportunities, family, etc. Everything he was given is everything I wish I had, instead of having to fight for it on my own. And he knows this, but he never mentions it directly. Instead, he (unintentionally) shows me how I can reconcile what I consider problems with my own life. I look up to him because he doesn't flaunt what he has. I worked hard to get some of what I have, and I make sure people know that. I would really like to be able to curb that.

The other person I look up to is his father, who started with nothing and worked his ass off to give the kid everything he has now. And he raised a decent kid, too, despite the fact that the kid didn't have to work much for anything in life. I've pretty much adopted this man as my father, as he embodies the things I think are lacking in my family.

I'm a happy child, and these two people are the reason why.

*a bit late, but I was out of town last weekend*

I look up to many many people. Not that I idolize them or want to be just like them - but that I admire them. Mostly, I look up to the seniors (we're not seniors - they are)from debate. They taught me so much about life, both directly and indirectly.

I also look up to my cousin, who taught me my first life lesson. I guess I tend to look up to people who teach me things.

Apu of the Simpsons. Dont laugh - I'm serious. When Matt Groening introduced that show to the world, Indian people did not have the fame/notoriety that they do now for random reasons (curry, outsourcing, etc). Through the show, Matt Groening broke down various stereotypes and used the character to promote acceptance of minorities.

-Shouldnt be too hard to figure out.
