We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves

"We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves." - Eric Hoffer

Well if that ain't the damned truth then I don't know what is.  If there's one thing I've learned from this job and can truly claim to knowing, it's people.  I've seen people tell themselves the most outrageous of lies, and when I first started, I couldn't grasp it.  I couldn't understand how a woman could flat out deny that her husband was cheating on her every night, causing a very dark side of her personality to come out and murder his various lovers.  I mean, maybe if she didn't lie to herself and just out and out confronted him, a lot of deaths could have been prevented.

But you know what?  Sometimes the lies we allow ourselves to believe are for our own protection.  Once that woman figured it out, she had something of a mental breakdown and ended up shooting herself in the head.  Makes me think she probably knew all along even what her subconciouss was up to, but pretending she didn't even know her husband was an unfaithful jackass just helped ease the pain of plain everything.

Lies play a big part in my everyday life.  I couldn't even tell you how many lies I've told.  I don't try to justify them, by saying they're for peoples own good.  I don't try to say it's because the lie is better than the truth.  A lie is a lie is a lie.

And the greatest ones are the ones people tell themselves for their own peace of mind.
