I think calls for bipartisanship are great and all, but I'll say it again: if only one side is doing the compromising it's called capitulation.
There are very real, very fundamental disagreements when it comes to worldview and policy, and these are serious matters. Some things you just don't budge on, like civil rights, pre-emptive war, or torture.
Also, vis a vis your 2004 post, everybody knows side of the political spectrum authoritarianism falls on. Unshakable faith in one's party and the leaders thereof has always been a hallmark of the right-wing. In fact, if you listen carefully, you can already hear talk of the latest dolchstoss.
