[Voice - Locked from Al, Winry, Gracia, and Elicia]

This might seem like a weird question, but I need to ask.

A lot of people - kids, even - act like they're fine with death and killing. The draft taught me that much. And around here dying doesn't even seem to matter because you just come back anyway. Is that what makes it- [Not okay, he can't ( Read more... )

[Robert's voice shakes as he answers this question. It hurts that he's accepted the burden to harm at all, never mind kill.]

...

... My... h-home planet, Terra... is... entirely non-violent. Before... b-before I came here, I... I could not conceive of even... h-harming a being. For... for a-any reason.

... Much... m-much less killing.

[He swallows audibly, trying to quell the mix of feelings in his chest.] And... and then... someone here was... injured greviously to... protect me. [Died to protect him.] ... I cannot allow that, not without... trying. Not without doing s-something...

... But I do not know if... if I could ever kill anyone.

[Pacifist, huh. He'd never have expected an entire planet/i> of people like that. This merits investigation.]

How'd your whole planet manage to keep things non-violent? I didn't think that was even possible.

[There is a long and uncomfortable history behind that, one that Robert is largely ignorant of. As it is, he's now awkwardly aware of just how deficient his knowledge is in this regard.]

... When I was born, i-it... had been the state for... approximately t-two hundred years.

...

I... s-suppose the anti-violence predilections of Terrans are part of it... a step away from the [- he catches himself almost wanting to say "barbarism" -] b-behaviour of pre-Terrans. But there are... other differences, too... differences I w-would have difficulty easily quantifying.

[By his manner of speech, he sounds like a type of scholar. Makes sense, from that sort of world.]

Are your people regular humans?

[Which would normally be a weird question to ask, but in Luceti, there seems to be all sorts...]

Death is never something that should be handle or thought so little of, even if we come back. It should never be acceptable if it can be stopped. [Dying of old age? About the only thing acceptable to Vash.] And killing will always be something no one has the right to.

[He knew he liked you, Vash.]

Then you don't kill people, either? Even on drafts?

[He does have an amazing fashion sense. He also likes that you use the word either.] Not even on the drafts. There's always another way.

[Great minds think alike, apparently.]

...Yeah, I agree. It's harder to do, but it's not impossible.

[Late into the night Winry decides to visit the boys. She knows about the day, and the secret of Ed's silver watch. She also knows it's cold so she's dressed warmly (and even brought a blanket). With her luck Ed might be sleeping by now, but even if he is Al will be there. The blond wonders if he'd like company, and is coming out of the house now to offer hers.]

[ ed's conked out, his shirt's probably riding up and al can't help but sigh a little. that's his brother alright.

it's been a long day. it always is. if they were home then this long journey would be done... but he can't think about that just yet. he looks up at the sound of approaching footsteps. ] Oh, Winry.

Hey, Al. [She joins the boys, kneeling down by Ed first to give up the blanket she brought to him.]

How's your night been?

It's been all right. Lots of people stopped by.

Well, it's killed or be killed, right? I mean, killing's a bad thing, but sometimes it just can't be avoided.

Why can't it, though? Why are those the only choices?

Well, it's kinda hard to negotiate with someone charging at you with a sword.

People can be disarmed or injured. I've got no problems with negotiating someone into unconsciousness.

Has anyone actually tried to capture the enemy, though? I haven't heard anything about that.

[It's true that he's still fairly new to Luceti, but he doesn't understand why killing has to be the only answer, even in war.]

I think it's worth trying. Not that many are likely to agree with me.
