I guess it could technically be anywhere. It got sucked into some kind of dimensional vortex, and who knows where those lead.

If this vortex was there before, then that should mean that it's possible to be brought again! But... How would someone do that? And once it's back, how would you get the sock out of it?

I wouldn't exactly call myself an expert on vortexes. [Even if you were to consider the Gate of Truth as that kind of thing - which... he really doesn't - he's only been there twice now. Not exactly expert qualification, there.]
