In fairness, a lot of the frustration with the 2009-2010 Congress was that despite Democrats' having a large majority in both houses of Congress and the presidency, the health care reform (which, along with the stimulus act, took up most of 2009) was fairly tepid and not what liberals wanted; it was more like a patch to a broken system rather than a new release. For that matter, Obama's leadership on the issue basically amounted to, "Meh, you guys in Congress figure it out, and I'll sign it." Of course, liberal != Democrat, but a lot of liberals found the resulting health care bill disappointing, even if it wasn't actually bad ( ... )

1) People do cite the popular vote. If, say, the President wins with less than 50% of the popular vote, that signals something.

2) In MA, there is a Senate vote -- Scott Brown versus a Democrat (I predict Elizabeth Warren will win the primary). That race is not a given.
