There's a beautiful philosphy and ideal behind almost every religion, but it gets corupted when man tried to impose social restrictions into it. What does traveling alone have to do with a religion anyway??
The whole thing becomes so muddled it's hard to tell where the purity in a theology ends and the human need to dictate an orderly life takes over...
I believe if you take the best aspects of the Sikh faith you like and dump the rest, you should be fine. I mean, it's not like you live in India now, where the freedom to do so may be challenged, right? Is your family part of a tight-knit social set in Canada?
Hope I am not being offensive; I know very little of your faith, but it seems to be a universal constant for all faiths.
