my central experience on this was reading the autobiography of ben bradlee, the great editor. it's called A Good Life, and he writes about sitting on his father's lap, his ear to his father's chest, listening to his father's heart beat.
an icicle of envy and dismay went through my stomach such as i had never felt before or since. while my father was present and there for me in many ways -- i have thought about him every day since his death 20 years ago, and our relationship continues to change and grow -- he was definitely not a warm and fuzzy guy.
and that's the way i was trained to be too. sort of.
