I can't understand the sequencing in that story.

There is a flood. Twenty-eight years later there is a fire. What the heck is "The first time was fifteen years ago." The flood is referred to as the first time the feeling of losing everything and not caring happened. But that was not fifteen years ago; it was twenty-eight.

Is there a mistake or am I misunderstanding something?

The Fire Dive was fifteen years ago, but that's not what the narrator is referring to by "first time". First time is the first time everything was lost and no effort was made to save it.

This story is driving me nuts. How could there be such a blatant error in it? Or how can I be so dense? It's one or the other. Help!
