i've got a(nother) theory.....
it's not bunnies, i promise. but i was talking to aphrodite33, and she said i could post this, but she's not the only one who had this theory. my friend Ben really likes it. when i mentioned to Aphrodite about Sam being emotionally "off" and (to borrow a word) RoboSam, she mentioned one word (well, a name) to me: Angelus.
her theory is that Sam came back without a soul.
filling in a little more, who ever brought Sam back topside took Sam's soul as payment without Sam knowing.
it's why he agrees with Dean that something's weird/wrong/off with Sam.
since we've been introduced to Balthazar, somewhat of a soul-dealer, you could make the suggestion that Balthazar is somehow involved in who/what brought Sam back.
of course, you could conversely argue they're just tossing around bits of nothing because the writers have no idea who brought Sam back and why. i mean, it took me until Fic#10 of my Maya'verse to finally come up with Maya's backstory....
so, that's how i see it, i'm probably wrong (cause i always am), and your mileage will vary.
(bonus posts if you can tell me the (loose) connection between my theory and my icon....)
