Summary: When Daddy and Papa said that Abby was going to be a big sister, it seemed like her life was going downhill.
Abby glared at the tiny baby lying in his crib with their parents cooing over him from above. This was the little monster that came into her family and took her parents away from her. She used to be their number one concern and now it was Brendon this or Brendon that. He screamed and he cried and he pooped. What was so great about that?
Abby remembered how it all started. It was when her parents started talking about trying. She didn’t really know what that meant, but Daddy told everyone that. Papa always just turned red. He was shy. He always got mad at Daddy afterwards for telling people. Abby thinks it has something to do with the fact that the last time they mentioned this trying thing, Papa went to the hospital and cried a lot. They didn’t really explain to her what was going on. Daddy said that they just needed to give Papa some space.
Anyways, she hated this trying thing. It meant that she had to go to bed early. It wasn’t fair! She was three years old; she’s old enough to stay up until eight, but no, with this trying thing they put her to bed at seven. They always giggled a lot with trying. They also touched each other and kissed each other a lot more with this trying. It was pretty gross.
The trying stopped when one day, Papa was really happy. He was singing to himself and being really cuddly to Abby. When Daddy came home from work Papa jumped into his arms and kissed him all over. “Jared, I’m pregnant!” he had shouted kissing him some more. Abby didn’t really know what pregnant meant, until they explained that there was a baby growing inside of Papa’s belly. That she herself was once in there. Abby was skeptical. How did a baby fit in his flat stomach?
She didn’t think much more it after that. Papa did change a little. He cried a lot more easily and ate a lot more. Papa had never eaten that much. He was always irritated with Daddy for being able to eat everything and not gain any weight. Papa never felt good in the mornings. He never got up early to begin with, but now he spent the whole morning in the bathroom. Papa started talking about babies all the time after that. He was constantly telling her that she was going to be a big sister.
Then Papa started getting fat. That was when everything changed. Strangers stopped gushing about Abby, but instead started talking to Papa about his stomach. They always touched it and cooed over it. Daddy was the worst. He would lay on the couch with Papa and talk to Papa’s belly and stroke it. Abby’s parents were really weird.
Papa even wanted her to talk to it! He and Daddy would tell her it would be good for bonding. That she needed to bond with her brother. Abby didn’t think she really needed to bond with Papa’s fat, but she talked to it anyways. Daddy would always tell her she was such a good big sister and then he would do something with her, like watch cartoons. Papa just cried, but then again Papa cries at commercials now.
Abby didn’t like going to the doctors. Ever since Papa found out about the baby, he was always there. The doctor would prod at his belly and then Abby had to go sit behind a curtain, so the doctor could check the birth canal. Abby didn’t know what that meant, and Papa wouldn’t tell her. It was mostly Abby and Papa going to the doctors. Daddy was normally at work. The times when Daddy was there was when they got to see the baby on a little TV. That made Daddy and Papa cry. Abby didn’t get it.
That was pretty much how her life was now. Papa got fatter and fatter and weirder and weirder as time went. Abby didn’t even remember what he was like before the baby, but she knows it must have been better than this.
“Jen, just breathe, okay? I’ll go get the bags and Abby. You just stay here and breathe,” Daddy had said waking Abby up. Daddy then picked her up and told her she was staying with Uncle Chris for the rest of the night. Abby hated the way Papa looked. He looked really pale and that he was hurting. When she asked him if he was, he lied and said no.
The next day, Daddy picked her up in the afternoon. His eyes were red and he was smiling. He took Abby to the hospital to see Papa and the baby. Papa looked pale and tired. The fat was mostly gone, at least. Then she saw him. She saw this scrunched up, bald, angry, pink thing.
“Eww! He’s ugly!” She had said. Papa cried and Daddy told her that that was not nice. Well, it’s true. He didn’t look anything like her baby dolls.
She later found out that he didn’t act like any of her baby dolls. He cried and screamed all the time. Papa said he was colicky. She didn’t know what that meant. At least Daddy stayed home for a few days, even though he just cared about the baby.
Papa was the one mostly with the baby. He normally had the baby up to his chest. He said the baby was eating. Abby didn’t really get that. There was nothing that Papa was holding. He just held the baby up against his chest with his shirt pulled up. How did he eat like that? When Abby asked, Papa laughed and said that Abby ate like that for almost two years. She so did not.
The baby seemed to be everywhere! Daddy and Papa didn’t pay any attention to her. It was all about the baby. Abby was sick of hearing about the baby. She wanted to get rid of him. So one day, she decided she was going to.
She had picked up the baby when Papa was cooking and Daddy was back at work. She was just about ready to put him in the trash when Papa saw. He got really mad and spanked her! See, that baby just ruined her life. Papa never hit her before.
“I don’t want the baby, anymore!” she had screamed.
“Why?” Papa asked looking hurt.
“Because you love him more than me,” Abby had said crying.
“Oh baby,” Papa cooed. “Daddy and I love you and your brother more than anything. It’s just, honey, he’s a baby. He needs a lot of attention now. You were the same way.”
Papa had sat down with Brendon on his lap and Abby by his side.
“Maybe you two just need to bound some more,” Papa had said putting the baby on Abby’s lap.
Brendon looked up at her and gurgled. He then smiled. Abby had never seen him do that before.
“He smiled! Just wait until your father hears this!” Papa had shouted. Apparently Papa hadn’t seen this before either.
Brendon grabbed one of Abby’s fingers and smiled. Maybe, her little brother wasn’t all that bad.
