I was going to get DirecTV installed today, until they got to the part of having to string cables through my house. The previous installer decided to use the existing wiring, but this installer decided he really wanted the stuff that meets their standards ( Read more... )

Maybe you google for it yourself and try to get a picture. I did the same and came up only with bad reviews. I also asked a Time Warner Cable technician about it. He told me the entire U-verse would come in over a DSL quality twisted pair. So I am very careful about U-verse, but I do like their pricing, since it includes phone at a internet phone service price point.

Yeah, thanks, I hadn't really tried that. I should have, though. dslreports.com has some reasonably positive reports, but it sounds like there are the usual problems with AT&T, DSL, and the incredible distance to the CO.

The choice I have at this point is U-verse or Comcast, and I know Comcast sucks.

U-verse's IP multicast sounds like the right thing to me, but I gather their compression is pretty aggressive. Then again, so was DirecTV's, and Comcast has been known to squeeze things down more than they should, too.

I've been a happy U-verse customer for 2.5+ years. Their service has been very reliable for TV and Internet. (We don't use their phone service.)

Installation was a modest hassle, but nothing you can't cope with. The installer has to screw around with all sorts of wiring leading to the house, especially if you're the first on the block to get U-verse. (If there's a locked utility cabinet, make sure you have a key.) Once that's dealt with, they played with the phone jacks a bit, though I can't remember why. You'll want to make sure those are accessible. Finally, my U-verse installer was able to reuse the existing coax installation intended for cable TV. That was nice and easy.

Activation took longer than I'd like, but the installer stayed until everything was working.

Feel free to ping me for more details.

AT&T just instituted a 250G up+down cap on monthly service. I believe it's $10/50G after that. I reviewed my DSL usage (150G cap) and I use between 50-200G/month. YUMV.

I can't even remember how to log into my AT&T account. But I have a feeling I'm nowhere close. Aside from some Netflix streaming, I don't do anything that consumes much bandwidth.

I looked it up on my dd-wrt zapped router. I work at home, and frequently upload gigs worth of data. And I've been know to torrent a few too many "linux DVDs". And the kids watch netflix regularly.
