admin note: plagiarism statement & modification to User Info for the comm

May 13, 2010 20:55

In light of recent events, I wanted to make a couple of statements about plagiarism as it applies to the three TS comms that I maintain (ts_fresh_air, ts_news, and ts_secret_santa1) Some questions have come up about my intentions regarding the comms and removing fic, recs, etc. Do you go just for the stuff you know to be plagiarized, or do you do a full-scale sweep? As someone who has occasionally recommended stories here, including the person in question, I'd have to agree with your current decision and new policy. It has been long and painful as the various fandoms involved have discovered plagiarism in their midst. It's all the more painful because it's quite rare in two of the fandoms, which are small and many fans know each other personally.

I expect that after everything is uncovered and we've had a chance to vent and heal, our wonderful fandom will continue clicking along. Thanks for your contributions to it, including the painful decisions you had to make as mod for the three communities.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a 'clean sweep' approach - in my view (which I claim only for me) it's like fruit of the poisonous tree, you know? The logic of the terminology is that if the source of the evidence (the "tree") is tainted, then anything gained from it (the "fruit") is as well.

No way to tell what's original and what's not, and regardless - there's still a taint. :(

Thanks -- I'm pleased that that seems to be the uniform consensus to date. It seems a logical approach to me, but at the time I wasn't sure how much the fact that I felt personally used because of my involvement with one of the stories was coloring my response.

I agree 100% and I'm so sorry you were forced into doing this. This shouldn't even be an issue, and it's a shame you got caught in the middle of it. :::HUGS:::
