Art: never means forever

A pinch-hit for shadowcat_spn in the spn_j2_xmas exchange!  Digital art made with a Surface tablet & stylus, in Autodesk Sketchbook.

I got inspired to make this image after reading shadowcat_spn's likes, which include angst, starcrossed lovers, and soulmates.  I immediately thought of the Lovers of Valdaro and Hasanlu Lovers--archaeological finds where pairs of people were found with their skeletons mingled together in what, to many viewers, looks like an embrace.  I used a photo from the Hasanlu expedition as a reference for this image, although I took some liberties with colours and by adding an amulet for each person (more on this later).

The idea of the Winchesters being buried together, embracing even in death, seems like the perfect (angstly) conclusion to a story that has always been about closeness and soulmatehood and very wiggly boundaries between the self and the other.

About the amulets: Dean has the Samulet, of course, identifying him as the figure on the right.  I also wanted to give Sam an amulet, one that Dean had given him later on in the series (part of my personal Samulet fix-it headcanon).  I chose an arrowhead amulet because it can symbolise protection (in life and afer death) from enemies, from illness, and from the evil eye; those seemed like qualities that Dean would want Sam to have with him at all times.  (Sam is the taller figure to the left.)

Please note that you can click on the thumbnail image above to see a bigger version of the piece, which you might need to do if you can't see the amulets well at this size.  <3
