A wise man once told me that most of the higher people of academia are under the old "Publish or Perish" regime.  What this means is that if University professors do not do research and use the students to do their work for them, they will end up going the way of the dodo, since they are not bringing research grants into the University itself.

What brought that on? I can imagine that it is tough for faculty members who have been around a long time to feel like they have to change so late in their careers. Do you feel, perhaps, that things change faster now than they used to? Are we constantly accelerating?

Nothing, really. Just more along the line of a moment or two of quiet contemplation, and this happened to be on my mind. So, no, nothing really spurred it on.
