My boss tried to rag on me until I quit. I held on and he had to lay me off, giving me severance pay and retirement.
Since your job was not specialized, theoretically you should have a better chance at getting a job than I do. People in TV are being laid off like crazy, and our skills aren't all that transferrable.
And you do have the principle of initiative on your side; you decided that your job was treating you badly and you walked. (I never walked because it was only one boss who hated my guts, and I liked the others I worked with.)
For what it's worth, I've seen a slight increase in job postings out there. Don't trust the Internet job boards, though. Use your contacts and friends to help you find job openings before they get advertised.
