My Grade 7 teacher was a big fan of the novel Shane, and always insisted that Palance should have played the title role.

“Warning” re King Kong: my son watched it when he was little, and even at his tender age he recognized that the SFX were grossly inferior to the Star Wars (and beyond) that he was used to. And yet, he watched the whole thing intently and without complaint, and was moved to tears at the end. That is raw power, sir.

Palance in the title role would have been interesting.

I think I'm saving Kong for the end, in part because I'm hoping to enjoy it the most of the bunch. In part of my head, I'm expecting low-tech special effects, but I think that my expectations are along the line of Harryhausen stop motion skeletons fighting Sinbad, which are a few decades more advanced than what I'll be getting.

Still, any sort of special effects will be welcome. I've been taking moments of delight when I recognize some sort of effect, even if it's low tech. "Oh, look - a woman jumped off a cliff! The cut to the dummy being thrown off the cliff isn't entirely jarring!" or "Huh, I wonder how they managed to make the bit where the doctor bleeds Joan of Arc look so convincing?" (Answer: they actually poked a hole in a real person's arm. Real blood looks roughly like you'd want it to on camera, sometimes.)
