You are not alone I have been guilty in the past of obsessively following rl facebook developments although I have slowed down in the past few weeks. It does make me think that there is another Facebook movie lurking but it might end up being like on Lifetime or TNT or something. :( The rise and decline of Social Media Empires. I don't know. Google+ huh? That might just be a Facebook killer I'm not going to lie.

All I have to say is that Facebook better hurry up and go forward with that IPO or that bubble that they are setting on is going to implode.

You know I knew nothing about facebook until I saw the movie. I didn't know who owned it or economic value or anything. I only saw the movie because I was doing a thesis on the decline of social interaction in society and how the web had replaced interpersonal connection.

Suddenly I'm like all geeky, loved the movie, write some fics... etc. ironically I still don't use facebook but yea, I find myself reading facts about facebook, and cases involved with it etc. Which I never would have done probably to not seeing that movie. I found out Mark Zuckerberg had a facebook for his dog and I was like "that's a little creepy" and then I actually looked at it and then I felt like a stalker.

I am too, to the point where my mom will send me articles she finds about Winklevii court cases.

I actually hated Facebook before the film because everyone was going berserk over it. All my friends tried to pressure me to join them (and now I'm making it sound like drugs xP) but soon all those privacy issues were raised so I had a good reason not to join. Then I saw the film (about 5/6 times now, and still silently praying for the end to change) and I kinda fell in love with them ( ... )

Ahaha...I think I'm pretty different. The only way I can write about the characters is to have a very clear divide between the real people and TSN the movie.

I've read up their bio and a few historical accounts to get an idea about the timeline, the depositions, the results, etc. But to be honest...it actually makes me think that the real!Mark was definitely a douche when in Harvard. A genius, but a douche who probably had more brains and skills than experience and ethics to balance things out. He seems better now (probably grew up), but there's been some pretty dodgy things FB has done not too long ago again. However, I also think the two lawsuits against MZ right now have no leg to stand on.

Someone cleverly stated before that TSN the movie was probably the best PR job for MZ. It not only promoted the view that Mark was the sole creator of Facebook and that the Winklevii don't really have a case, it also portrays him to be an eloquent speaker with a cutting wit, when he's not nearly as smooth a talker in reality.

I think I can separate the people but not the site, if that makes sense? Like if the real!FB went bust this year, I couldn't suspend my disbelief for a fic where it was still around in 2015.

Perhaps it's because I'm a software dev myself, projects pretty much have their own personality to me?

And yeah, RL!Mark seems to have pretty much of a brat at 20-ish, without TSN!Mark's excuses.

Aaah, I see what you mean actually. I just reread what you said and I think my comment is probably more applicable to people talking about RL!Mark and RL!Eduardo.

This is a terrible thing to say, but I wonder if Facebook starts declining, will people write fics in that vein as well.

In any case, I think Facebook is here to stay for awhile yet. There seems to be a number of interesting attempts to expand, like how they want people to use email in FB and Project Spartan for app dev on iPhones/Touch/Pads.

By the way, I'm on Google+ and it's looking pretty nifty at the moment. Very similar in layout to facebook, but a little more stripped down and with additional functionality. It's fascinating to see all the giants flexing their muscles, but I think Google has a way to go in social networking considering Facebook's user base.

Yeah, I have a feeling that Google may not be able to catch up with FB, that it will be some other new shiny start-up coming up from behind.

Which is not to say that FB will die off, especially if they manage to diversify first the way Google themselves have. They just won't be cool any more :)
