A question

Disclaimer of sorts:  Okay so believe me when I say this I'm telling the truth:  I do not want to start any wank.  This place is wank free and I want it to remain that way but I do have a serious question ( Read more... )

hmm, i see what you mean. the same thing happens to me.
well, from a more selfish point of view, i think it takes a special kind of reader to provide really good concrit, and most of the times my fics don't get enough readership to see a lot of that. besides TSN is a fandom of pretty high caliber, there are so many excellent authors who can "do it better" that when you stumble upon something that you don't like as much, you just scroll and read something more awesome.

that said, i agree that more concrit would do this fandom good :)

I think there is a really fine line to walk when it comes to constructive criticism. Some people would love to have it, and some are just writing for fun and don't really care about improving. And both attitudes are totally fine. I won't ever give someone constructive criticism on a fic unless they've asked for it. If they've mentioned it in their author's note and I have some suggestions? Sure, I'll leave something constructive in the comments. But I don't want to force that on people if they don't want it. Getting a comment that's like, "I loved this, but...." can sometimes be very demoralizing if you're not someone who's open to hearing the negatives. And that's fine. This isn't for school and this isn't real life - this is just fandom. If people want to just write for their own personal enjoyment? That's all fine by me ( ... )

agreed! ugh your comment makes a much better point than mine. i guess i would fall in the second category, 99% of the things i write are for my own enjoyment only and i wouldn't be thinking about how to improve their quality when i was writing. but if it's something i take more seriously and want to do a good job on, i would definitely try to find a beta before i publish it and ask for concrit from readers of the general public. but yeah most of the times i am shameless and will publish anything i write soon after i'm done with it, lol.

+1 all of this

I frankly am one person who doesn't care about "improving" my writing, and if I kept getting harshly critiqued here, regardless of whether I felt the critiques were valid or not I would probably just go elsewhere. It's just not why I'm in fandom.

to be honest the only criticism I'm willing to do is when I have problem to understand the plot (ex. who is speaking) and/or has gasp in it.
I'm not an English native and my knowledge of this language is not advanced (I learned it mostly reading A LOT of fanfics XD) so I can't judge other aspects of writing.
PLUS I'm really convinced that you can't criticized characterization, because we all have a different vision from each others.

And, let's face it, who I am to criticized another writer? :(

There two components to criticism. One is copy-editing: spelling, grammar, etc., the other is actual content editing. I can read past bad spelling and typos because I am not here for perfectly copy-edited fic, especially since a lot of fills are spur of the moment, I got inspired and just typed it into the comment box fills. And with the latter, it's a question of personal taste and not wanting to rock the boat.

I've given criticism only once on the meme in a meandering, "this bothers me but I can't tell you exactly why" way and while the author politely nodded, I am not sure if she took me seriously or if I just went down as a hater in her book.
