stoning
I admit to be socially avoident most of the time. It's not that my parents didn't teach me - I was sent to etiquette class, I can do basic ballroom dancing (yah rly) plus which fork to use and how to make small talk. It's just that I've never really been suited to that kind of lifestyle and have difficulty even with my own friends. I'm not lonely, I just like being alone sometimes.....unfortunately people never seem to understand that.

It's a bit odd considering the "lolita lifestyle" and all but I abhor that kind of butterfly-esque socializing because it's so bloody tedious. I'll rather eat cold takeaway pizza than be straightjacketed into a family dinner at an unpronouncable (re: senselessly pretentious) French restaurant. I always feel kinda guilty for griping about it considering the hilarious amount of foie gras/wine loving folks - but if you have to endure over 6 dinners a year and banal conversations lasting for 7 hours (oh WHY does it always end late?!?) you'll get sick of it soon enough (and full on canapes). Therefore, my ideal evening is dressing like a slob infront of TV and watching Black Adder/Dr. House re-runs with a bowl of egg+noodle soup and finishing off with frozen yohgurt and trashy magazines.

reading
I read obsessively...and I mean, OBSESSIVELY. I can't go into a dentist office without reading the KEEP YOUR TEETH SHINY brochures because it's there. When I go into public washrooms, I read those sanitary dispensary dustbins (those blue ones) with instructions on how to throw it properly. The most embarassing book-reading incident was when I was reading the book of the person next to me and he turned the page and I said: "wait, I haven't finished yet" and he gave me this WTF expression. Just like how some people can't stop talking, I can't stop reading.

The only good part democratically reading books is that I never get bored and I'm not elitist about it. I'm equally happy reading Roland Barthes as I am reading Britney Spear's divorce case. I'm just happy to read, 'nuff said. The only exception is academic readings - I just don't react well to complusory reading (but I'll read the calculator manual rly.)

art/painting
Can't live without it. I always feel a bit pretentious when I say I'm studying art but I can't stop thinking about it. If I'm not drawing I'm painting. If I'm not painting I'll be taking photographs. If I'm not doing photography I'll be busy making blu-tack figurines........I was really upset when my parents refused to send me to St. Martins' in London, but I have to believe things will get better. A whole lot of art isn't really about creativity but your determination to stick with it.

I've actually cried thinking about not being able to do art anymore and sometimes it's really embarassing >_> It's really strange...but I still remember as a kid my mom would cane me and I would tell her she could hit me anywhere but my hands. It didn't matter if the back of my knees hurt more (the skin is thinner) but that she didn't hurt my hands if not I won't be able to draw.

prints
I have an unholy fascination with anything with prints. On one level, I'm the over-decorating type of person who just keeps adding and adding and adding stuff because a plain surface is ASKING to be printed. I refuse to subscribe to zen-minimalism because it's cold and unfriendly and boring, plus how many layers can you add before looking like a particularly wet peeling dumpling? I tried classic lolita before, but I was total fail because I cannot CANNOT resist adding stuff in it (like striped socks D:) On the another level, it just seems more value-for-money to buy something with a print rather than a plain skirt you can easily make/alter/comission yourself.

I'm quite picky about my prints though - I don't like florals much and I will never understand gingham or toyboxes. It's a bit strange, but I love intellectualizing prints. Like the alice chess is referenced to Through The Looking Glass and not Wonderland or the can print from Emikyu which is slightly Warhol/pop influenced.

linen: bedsheets and sleepwear

I'm quite lazy despite being a perfectionist. Between buying bedsheets for christmas and lolita - I'll say go for the bedsheets. My theory is that you spend 10hrs a night sleeping on it compared to the couple of hours you wear lolita going out. Multiply that by the number of times you wash bedsheets (once every forthnight) you'll come up to 140hrs spent on sleeping on bedsheets. Logically, it's more cost-effective. Therefore, I insist on buying good bedsheets and sleepwear.

It's not cheap though - I have 700 threadcount Egyptian combed cotton sheets and can only afford 2 in plain colours (it's about $230 w/o sale, $150 on sale). But seriously, it's so freakin' worth it because it's so soft and resistent. No itchyness, no fibres, no allergic reactions and best of all, it keeps cool during summer but retains body heat during winter. It's a bit insane to own expensive bedsheets (especially since I've been lusting after them since I was 16) but considering the time and quality it's totally worth it.

yahoo!Japan

The idea of a "Good Deal" coupled with exciting bidding makes this irresistible. Sometimes I don't need/want to buy, but I'll flick through 32+ odd pages just to see pictures and look at items from older lines (I'm a photo-hoarder)....people sell the oddest things! And sometimes you can see really cool and WTFy items that were released before. Y!J isn't just for shopping to me, it's like a shifting clothes-gallery collection filled with weird miscy items you can actually -buy- and compete for.

I'm lucky enough that the brands I like aren't as popular or well known as others, so I don't have to compete with a large international market. So far, the best deal I had was a pair of JM socks for 70yen and the worst deal I had was for the AP puppet circus skirt for an obscene amount.

hats

...........because mini-hats are silly D: I don't like berets much either (at least not the pancakey lolita ones). I like HATS. Full, brimmed hats. Bowler, boaters, straw, wool, felt, leather, fedora, cowboy - whatever. If you can pick a good hat, it shows effort and gives a nice quirky-ish elegance which you don't get in pseudo-vintage wannabes. Also, it's like a strange defiant statement: I like hats SO WHAT? :D!

Plus, it's functional. A wool hat does wonders in keeping you warm in winter, and a straw hat shades your eyes from the glaring Melbourne sun. I guess that's why I've never really fancied a mini-hat (non-functional) or alice bows.....they don't do anything except match! D: They can't even hide a bad hair-day which you can by stuffing your frizz into the hat (now you know) Therefore....HATS. Good, big happy hats. *advertises* get wearing!
