First Trial of Patience
Back in time
Location: Cafeteria
Class 3 D, Senior Year Horikoshi Gakuen
“This is so…depressing,” Hikaru whined plopping down dramatically on a seat opposite his two group mates. Taiyou looked at him concerned while Yabu nibbled on an apple looking thoroughly bored. The school canteen was alive with the chatter of students and the air was thick with the ever-growing excitement of the approaching event.
“Yabu-kun has only a week left till graduation, I feel sad,” Hikaru continued folding his arms over the table and placing his chin on them, a small pout around his lips.
Taiyou patted him lightly on the head with an understanding smile. Yabu on the other hand had unexpectedly (sort of) caught the eye of the girl sitting on the adjacent table and was planning to use this to his full advantage.
“Yabu? Are you even listening to what I’m saying?” Hikaru huffed irritably as he realized the older was currently too engrossed in exchanging smiles with that girl. He rolled his eyes as Taiyou held back a chuckle. Hikaru clicked his tongue impatiently, annoyed by being taken this lightly.
“Hmm, she’s cute right?” Hikaru commented interested all of a sudden. Taiyou shrugged but then gulped and muttered a small “oh oh” as he realized the dangerous twinkle in the boy’s eyes and the mischievous aura radiating from him.
Hikaru hooked his legs skillfully underneath the wooden leg rest of Yabu’s chair and pulled quickly and forcefully, causing the object to slide forwards and elevate slightly, just before crashing backwards onto the floor with the occupant still on it.
Yabu’s face turned tomato red as laughter echoed in the vicinity.
He stared up as Taiyou’s troubled and Hikaru’s innocent, smiling face appeared in his field of vision.
“I’m really going to miss you in school Yabuchi,” Hikaru said sweetly with a pout and grinned as Yabu’s hands extended towards his neck, very close but not yet reaching as Taiyou ‘mama’ was successfully yet reluctantly holding him down.
Second Test of Patience
Time: Year of Debut
Venue: Tokyo Dome
Concert Rehearsal
Tokyo Dome, a massive arena of stars….a threshold for the budding legends. In time, its spectacular stage has become a symbol of the rising Suns of a massive industry.
‘I’m finally here.’
Standing on the center of the stage, Yabu Kota inhaled deeply the conditioned air of the stadium feeling strange tingles growing from the pit of his stomach. There were only random voices in the background, but all were being drowned by the dramatic orchestra within his head.
Just then, an awfully loud and painful voice blasted from the speakers as the sound systems were turned on along with one of the mikes.
“Hello testing, testing one two three…RYUTARO-KUN, your head looks too big for your body, did you eat something nasty?”
Ryutaro glared at his senpai as his teammates burst out laughing. Hikaru strode to the middle of the stage, looking as if he was trying to stuff the mike down his throat. Yuto was squealing with laughter as he rolled on the floor, Yamada staring at him as if he was a species from outer space.
Yuri was practicing some steps away from the rowdy bunch, a very serious look on his face.
“Yo, Nakajima-kun, you sound so much like a BUTA when you laugh yo!”
Yuto stopped laughing immediately. Yabu slapped his palm onto his forehead.
“Chinen-kun. Ano Chinen-kun? That step looks pretty messed up yo, better practice hard or else you’ll make a BIG mistake later!
Chinen stared quietly, his eyes starting to water, lips trembling.
“That wasn’t even funny,” Takaki hollered from his place as Chinen rushed into his arms, bawling.
“SO WHAT IF I’M SMALL!” Chinen shrieked as Takaki hugged him and looked around for Daiki who was rushing towards them with a lollipop in his hand.
Shaking his head at Hikaru (who was giggling away like a madman), Yabu made his way down stage, pass a self-conscious Ryutaro, a distressed Yamada (who was trying to convince the other that his head was in perfect proportion with his body), Takaki, Daiki and Chinen (who seemed very much like parents trying to calm their crying child) to where their manager stood with the concert director.
“Hey Hikaru-kun, stop kissing that stupid mike you desperado!” Inoo shouted comforting a sobbing Yuto.
“I will if you promise to ride roller-coasters for the rest of your life Inoo-chan!” Hikaru shouted back gleefully as Inoo turned pale.
Yabu tried very hard to concentrate on the director’s plan, nodding now and then to his instructions, with Hikaru singing ‘Rain Dance’ in a voice that resembled a cat that had its tail stepped on behind.
“You sure you can handle this?” the manager asked finally. Yabu nodded firmly.
“I have a talented, responsible team under my care, it should be no problem,” he added confidently. The director looked pleased.
Yabu turned around and gasped as the entire Jump besieged him, all complaining loudly about Hikaru. He frowned as Chinen clutched onto him and Yuto continued crying loudly, one arm choking Yamada (who was trying to get away desperately) and the other Inoo.
“Hikaru-kun is acting very immaturely, I’m not OBSESSED with pocky!” Daiki defended angrily.
Hikaru was pretending to talk like Darth-Vader now, the raspy breaths and all.
Yabu felt the manager pat him on the back.
“Good luck Yabu-kun, I’m sure you’ll do well.”
With that they left.
Yabu sighed feeling more like a kindergarten teacher than an Idol.
“Yeah Yabu-kun, I know how you feel, there should be an age limit for debuted Idols,” Hikaru bellowed into the mic causing all of Jump to stare incredulously at him before fixing their gazes onto the oldest.
‘What a wrong time to prove the strength of our mental connection idiot,’ Yabu thought furiously as Yuto, and Chjnen burst into tears.
Hikaru winked at him.
Yabu scowled, trying his best to drown the strong desire to march up on stage and choke him then and there.
Third Trial of Patience
Time: 2nd year after Debut
Venue: Changing Rooms,
PV Training Room,
Jimoshu Building
“YABU-KUN!”
Yabu pulled the towel off his face as Ryutaro rushed towards him.
“What is it?” Yabu asked concerned as the boy came to a sudden halt. He was panting and his face was flushed.
“Come quickly,” the younger gasped grabbing his hand and dragging him to the adjacent room. Yabu froze as he saw Hikaru on the floor, lips a pale blue, a huge red mark slightly above his ankle.
Inoo was checking his pulse.
“This is strange?” Inoo mused with a scowl.
“What happened?” Yabu asked urgently, feeling Hikaru’s forehead. He was cold.
“He just came out of that room, saying that he saw something and then collapsed, this might be a bite,” Inoo said worriedly pointing at the red mark.
“Get help, I’ll go check,” Yabu instructed Ryutaro and dashed into the other room.
It was the locker room. Only a few lights were on, and the dim lighting gave the empty room an eerie feel. The pipes in the ceiling made clanking noises. He scanned the floor but found nothing. Just then he heard the door being locked behind him.
He rushed to it and tried to turn the handle but no use. He was locked in. Just then he heard a voice from the other side, it was Chinen.
“Inoo-kun, Hikaru-kun, have you seen my science project? I need to take it home as soon as possible before the manager finds out I brought a reptile to practice,”
Yabu felt his insides squirm.
“Hikaru!”
“Relax Ko-chan, it’s not poisonous,”
“I don’t care you IDIOT! It’s still a slimy, scaly, slithering reptile!”
“Oh fair leader, please take this as a test of your courage to prove to your humble followers of your magnificence,”
He could hear Inoo chuckling in the back.
“Hikaru, when I get out, I’m strangling you to death!”
“Sure sure dearest, see you after lunch!”
“What? Wait! Hikaru get back! GET ME OUT OF HERE!”
Yabu turned around swiftly as he heard a soft hiss. As his eyes fell upon the reptile, that had its slit-like pupils focused on him, he gulped.
“I’m going to kill him.”
* 30 minutes later
“That was really mean of you!” Daiki scorned as he and Takaki rushed to unlock the door. Hikaru shrugged, his face colored with slight guilt and concern. They threw the door open and Hikaru pushed the other two aside, shouting Yabu’s name.
“KOTA!” he exclaimed finding the lanky figure sitting with his back against the wall in a corner. There was a deep green rope around his neck. Rushing to his side he backed off shocked as Yabu looked up at him with a small smile.
One hand was around a manga and the other was rubbing the triangular head next to his cheek.
“It likes me, cool hah? And yah tell Yamachan he’s too young to be reading Gantz, I found an entire stock in his locker and man is this gory,”
Hikaru gaped. Yabu smirked.
Fourth Trial Of Patience
Time: A few years after Debut
Venue: A Privately Booked Café in Tokyo
(Hikaru Yaotome’s birthday party)
“Yabu come out please!” Shoon called, fingers rasping urgently on the door. The oldest Jump had locked himself in the men’s room and was refusing to come out. He looked at Keito standing next to him who looked back, just as concerned.
“I HATE HIKARU!” came back a muffled yell. Shoon’s eyes widened. He called Taiyou who was too engrossed in a conversation with Yamada and Daiki until a paper ball came pelting his way. He looked at Shoon angrily but rushed to his side immediately at the distressed look the older gave him.
Previously that day, all of Jump plus Shoon and Taiyou had received a box filled with paper chits. On each chit a costume was written. They had to randomly select one and don that costume at his party that night. Costumes were provided by Hikaru as well.
Daiki was in a sailor costume. Takaki was in a suit with tie. Inoo was in light blue PJs. Ryutaro and Chinen were vampire brothers while Yuto, was a samurai and Yamada, a ninja. Taiyou was a cook while Shoon was a soldier. Keito was dressed up as rocker, his guitar slung on his back.
Hikaru had yet to arrive.
“Yabu, come on, we’re all looking weird, what could be that bad, just come out, we won’t laugh,” Taiyou assured him.
“Weird, I think we’re looking pretty fine…,” Yamada said smugly as he and Yuto did a high five. Keito gave them a warning look.
They heard a sigh before the door was unlocked. Just then, the café door opened and Hikaru (dressed in a black prince outfit) walked in, a young woman in a red floral kimono by his side. The door of the men’s room opened and Yabu stepped out. There was a strange silence in the room.
Hikaru stared at Yabu with his mouth open before smiling triumphantly. The girl next to him gasped, her face a symbol of pure shock. Shoon palmed his forehead.
Jump stared at the frilly purple dress, the heels, the necklace and finally the tiara on Yabu’s head. Yabu looked like he was about to faint.
“Miyano?” he gulped as the girl looked down immediately, lips twitching. Turning on his heels he rushed back into the rest room and locked the door again.
Hikaru burst out laughing as the rest exploded into chatter.
“He actually looked stunning,” Takaki commented as Inoo nodded reverently.
“Great going Hachibee!” Taiyou cheered as Hikaru gave him a thumbs up. Shoon looked at Miyano who seemed very nervous all of a sudden, cheeks a bright red and sighed.
Inside, Yabu removed the frilly belt around his waist and wrapped it around the tap before pulling it tight, imagining the neck of the tap to be Hikaru’s instead.
Final Trial of Patience (yes, i really mean final)
“Do you hate me Yabuchi,”
“No, why would I?”
“Because I purposely embarrassed you in front of your lady friend,”
“She’s not my girlfriend, we’re just acquaintances,”
“I never said she was your girlfriend,”
“Whatever,”
“So you don’t hate me?”
“For the last time Hikaru, NO!”
Hikaru grinned and almost choked the frustrated boy with his hug.
“Great, now I can finally tell you the truth,”
Yabu stared at him confused as Hikaru got to his knees in front of him dramatically.
“Yabu Kota,”
“Yah?”
Hikaru bit his lip nervously. Yabu rolled his eyes.
“Say it already,” he scorned impatiently.
“I’m so, so, sorry I crashed your car into a ditch and now it’s at the mechanics and the repair will apparently take a lot of money, so I’m really sorry to make you have to spend this much money and I promise to drive my own ugly car instead of your really kakkoi one!”
With that he dashed out of the room leaving a gaping Yabu behind. When the whole thing finally dawned upon him, Yabu balled his hands onto fists.
“I”LL KILL YOU YAOTOME!!!”
The Time when Patience Failed…miserably…
Yabu breathed in deeply. He brushed his white tuxedo nervously and stared at the crowd of people looking up at him. These people were not here for entertainment, not here to see him perform….no these people were here for him.
He saw Jump wave at him from the crowd and Shoon smiling as he held a handy cam ready to film him. His brothers and sister were watching him from the side with his parents. He turned around and saw Taiyou on the phone. He smiled at them, at his family, his senpais, his employer, his bandmates, his friends and felt butterflies in his stomach as a car stopped just before the floral arch down the aisle.
“Is the bride here?” he heard his sister. The door opened. Yabu felt his pulse go wild but it came to a sudden stop as a flustered Hikaru rushed in from under the arch and ran all the way up to the stage.
“Where were you idiot, how would have we continued without the best man?” Taiyou scolded flailing his phone in Hikaru’s face.
“Ko, I’m so sorry, but I’ve lost the rings,”
“What!” Yabu exclaimed drawing attention.
“Yeah, my dog ate em.”
“YABU-KUN!”
Yabu sat up with a start. Yamada and Chinen were looking at him slightly amused.
“It’s time for our photo shoot, manager-san asked us to wake you up,”
Just then Hikaru poked his head in.
“Yo sleepy head!”
“You,” Yabu growled narrowing his eyes. Hikaru raised an eyebrow but then widened his eyes in shock as Yabu sprinted towards him before lunging at him and pinning him down, hands around his throat.
*
“Guys come quick, Yabu-kun’s lost it!” Chinen shouted worriedly at the rest of Jump and the staff in the shooting room.
“What’s wrong?” Daiki asked getting to his feet.
“He’s strangling Hikaru-kun yelling ‘How could you lose the rings’,” Yamada added frowning.
A confused Jump made their way to the next room to pull Yabu off a bewildered Hikaru.
“I think he needs a break ne?” said the director to the manager who wholeheartedly agreed.
