First Time

Inoo Kei wrapped his arms around his petite frame, rubbing them up and down in an effort to warm himself from the chill of the blowing gale and the rain gurgling against the walls of the Jimoshu building.

He watched his fellow juniors run down the steps and across the entranceway to their awaiting cars, relishing the shower after a hard day of practice. He sighed deep and breathed out with a shiver.

He hated this weather and worst of all, he had no umbrella.

“Hey?”

He jumped at the sound of a familiar voice and turned to find Johnny’s young star behind him, pushing open his own red umbrella.

“Yabu-kun?” he squeaked, feeling a little in awe to be this close to the 13 year old Golden Boy.

“Do you wanna share my umbrella?” Yabu asked with a smile. Inoo gaped.

After a few moments of silence, it got a little too awkward.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to,” Yabu replied nervously. He looked to the side as he heard Jin call his name.

“See you later then,” Yabu said with a nod before rushing off to his senpai.

Inoo smacked himself hard.

“Idiot,” he grumbled, rubbing the now stinging spot as he began his walk home under the rain.

Second Time

He leaned back against the tree, relishing the soft droplets that fell upon his closed eyelids, down his neck, drenching him completely. The air was thick with the smell of moist dirt and wet jasmine as he dug his sneakers deeper into the earth, wishing with all his might that it would swallow him whole.

He opened his eyes and felt a stab to his already wounded heart at the sight of the empty playground. The balloons had popped. The wet streamers were glued to the metallic structures of the see-saws, the swing set and the monkey bars.

The large banner that stated “Happy 14th Birthday Kei” was hung between two lampposts, the ink oozing downwards and giving the sign a slight gothic look.

He really couldn’t believe it. Just because of the rain…nobody came.

He pushed himself off the ground and staggered under the drizzle, sneezing his way home.

Third Time

He was proud of himself.

Very, very proud.

It wasn’t really because he had topped in the college entrance exam…that was one thing, but it was the fact that he was finally beginning to enjoy the dull, cold monsoons.

The reason for that was because it was raining heavily outside and clutched between his slender fingers was a big, blue umbrella.

Finally.

He pushed it open, watching it hover above his head with a dazed smile.

“Achoo!”

The sneeze brought him out of his preoccupation with himself and his eyes widened as he spotted a red nosed Nakajima Yuto by his side.

“Are you alright Nakajima-kun?”

The younger boy looked up at him and gave him a rather drunken, lopsided smile.

“I look like Rudolf the Reindeer don’t I?” he chirruped swaying slightly. Inoo stared at him, bemused. He looked back as the main doors opened and watched a flustered Yamada patter down the stairs and rush to join his companion. He gave Inoo a polite nod before suddenly slapping Yuto’s cheek. Inoo jumped in surprise.

“Ow! What was that for?” Yuto bellowed, clutching the affected side of his face. Yamada placed his hands on his waist and glowered at the slightly taller boy.

“First, stop acting like a drunken Ojisan, it’s just a cold and secondly, it’s still a cold and you being the idiot that you are not only forgot your own umbrella at home but broke mine as well!” Yamada retorted breathlessly.

“Mou Yamachan!” Yuto whined with a sad pout. Inoo rolled his eyes as he watched his fellow group mates squabble unintelligibly before with a sigh, he handed Yuto his umbrella.

The shocked youngsters watched their senior march down the steps and into the rain, grumbling something about his “cursed fate.”

“You know,” Yuto quipped.

“He’s pretty nice.”

Fourth Time

He watched them frolic about in the heavy downpour, wide smiles plastered upon their faces, sniggers, chuckles and guffaws reverberating through the air, penetrating the thickness of the noisy natural shower.

His lips tugged into a smile as he watched them collide and collapse; rolling on the damp grass like it were a bed of clouds.

No, they didn’t act like a bunch of boys in their 20s, but that’s what he loved about them so much. He wondered though as he leaned forwards slightly, testing the water as it wetted the palm of his outstretched hand, of why he wasn’t in there with them.

His eyes widened as he saw the tallest of Best get on his feet and beckon him to join them. He bit his lips and stared at the ground.

The rain meant loneliness for him…he wasn’t ready to see it in a new light yet.

He looked up to find them all staring at him bemused before he shrugged the offer off with a smile.

“I have exams coming up,” he told them before starting off for the nearest train station, using a file as a cover from the pelting rain.

Fifth Time

He raised a hand and waved goodbye to his departing classmates, watching them disappear one by one or in pairs under the assortment of umbrellas. He settled himself under the sheltered roof of the bus stop and pulled out a textbook.

He placed in his headphones to try and blot out the sound of the thunder rolling overhead.

Almost 10 minutes later he peered up at the sky, a scowl in place. The clouds were thick, dark and fluffy, cluttered together and pouring generously over the world below. He sighed deep and placed his textbook back in his bag before slinging it over his shoulder.

He took out his cellphone and stared at the screen, pondering over the cause of this action. Frowning as nothing came to mind, he slid it back into his jeans pocket and stepped under the deluge.

~That One Time ~

“This sucks, big time,”

Inoo wondered of why he hadn’t stitched an umbrella to his skin. This was for the umpteenth time that he was stuck on the entrance of the Jimoshu with the pouring rain greeting him.

He groaned.

“Hey there,”

Recognizing the voice he turned around and gave his best friend a small smile. The tall young man stood occupied with his old red umbrella and his face lightened up as he finally managed to open it.

Inoo’s smile got wider.

This was rather nostalgic.

“Otsukare Yabu,” he said. The older boy hummed a reply before holding his umbrella above him.

“Going home?” he asked looking ahead into the curtain of water falling from the sky. Inoo nodded, smile faltering.

“Good,”

Inoo yelped as Yabu hooked an arm around his and almost began dragging him down the steps. Steadying himself, Inoo looked at his friend in surprise. The older just replied with an amused grin.

“I decided that I was done asking,” he added with a nod as he adjusted the object so that they were both completely covered.

Inoo laughed and gave the other a friendly shove.

“Good thing you did.”
