jongin always thinks of joonmyun on the first days of spring, flowers blooming bright into a blur of colours he catches a glimpse of from the van windows. he thinks of how joonmyun had been his spring once upon a time, warm, gentle and comforting. he supposes that’s what first love is meant to feel like, deceptively soft and sweet, until all he’s left with is memories that refuse to go away, of blindingly beautiful smiles, long fingers intertwined with his and knees bumping into each other underneath tiny restaurant tables. spring doesn’t last, though, and flowers eventually wither away - it’s why jongin isn’t surprised when he watches joonmyun gradually turns from a warm spring to an even warmer summer to a cool autumn and finally to the coldest winter. joonmyun gives up on sm and breaks jongin’s heart in the process, but jongin doesn’t really hold it against him because he can’t begin to imagine how joonmyun feels. it wasn’t meant to last anyway, whatever he and joonmyun had together, he tries to tell himself as he watches joonmyun walk out of sm’s doors for the last time, even as he wonders if he should wait for joonmyun to melt back into spring.
(joonmyun is in the vip section with some other sm artists at the debut showcase two years later. jongin steals glances throughout the showcase, trying not to stare at joonmyun's smile and the way he was enthusiastically waving and cheering whenever their eyes met, until he realizes he had been right that day joonmyun had left. they hadn’t lasted and joonmyun wouldn’t be anything more than his first love, someone who had taken a part of jongin's heart and didn't have to give it back, someone who had been his spring once and had now become spring again, just not his spring, someone who had become a reminder that both first loves and seasons don’t last, and jongin was ready to accept that now, smiling and waving back at joonmyun, the first love that was never meant to stay as his.)
