YES.
I WAS HOPING FOR DAI SATO TO MENTION EDEN OF THE EAST IN THE COURSE OF THIS PROGRAM.
I am in lala-land right now.
Basically he was talking about the evolution of the same ideas in different eras. He compared three works: Battle Spaceship Yamato, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Eden of the East and how they reflected the perspective of the people of Japan in their times. Yamato was created with parallels to World War II and Japan's eagerness to seek help from America after the nuclear bombings. Evangelion reflected the isolationist period afterwards. "First impact" and "second impact" are WWI and WWII, as you probably know already. It's a stark contrast to the new film adaptations, where instead of trying to run away, the characters seek communication and understanding. This change is directly caused by the different eras in which the works were made. Ghost in the Shell addressed the issue of foreign immigration in Japan. When creating Eden of the East, the staff thought about a rising problem in Japan, which was the increase in younger-aged people committing suicide and NEETs. The statistics made it clear that the youth was losing faith in the future. Of course, this anime addresses the threat of terrorism as evidenced by 9/11. The North Korean missile crisis was actually not a contributing element to EotE. It was coincidental. The staff wanted to create a story where only the NEETs themselves could save the day, and become useful to society. Dai also said that New York is crucial to the story and that the story will end with the characters there.
Aaaanyway, we went to Little Airplane Studio, where they make television shows for children. We were toured around the studio (the place is amazingly cute and homey) while people were working on episodes of Wonder Pets and 3rd & Bird. It was great. They had Wacom Cintiqs scattered around everywhere. Do want.
The program is already half over! I'm still kinda in shock from the experience. I really really hope our group's animation turns into an anime! We have a great setup already and I'm so excited. :D
