Canada - Federal Debate

Oct 02, 2008 21:29

I have promised myself that I would vote in this federal election, but I still am very unclear on all the platforms at this point. Eep. I have an idea of where I stand, but in not knowing enough about the platforms, I'm not going to make any comments ( Read more... )

voting is an easy (and important) way to have our voice heard!
something like only 20-25% of people under 21 vote... while 80-85% of seniors do.

this is our future we're talking about!

i'm glad you're trying to educate yourself here -- even if you're still confused. maybe the leaders' debate will give you some feeling of what their policies are? (don't mind the first half hour with all the harper-bashing, though.. it gets better, i promise :-) ).

probably will have the english debate up online by the middle of tomorrow. the (translated) french one (i don't encourage watching this one, though!) is already up there.

Haha, you're so optimistic. I am sick of Canadian politics. And other politics. Spread the word: write-in for George Strombolopolous! I think he could kick all those guys' asses, especially in the debates. XD

My problem this year is that no one appears to have a platform outside of slagging off the Conservatives (who I don't like, but really), or, in Harper's case, trying not to look like an evil cyborg in a sweater vest. I don't want any of these jokers running the country. I thought about voting NDP this year because Green doesn't really do it for me anymore but then that garbage with Layton throwing a hissy fit about May being in the televised debates came up and now I'm annoyed with him.

On top of that I am a non-Conservative in a decidedly Conservative riding, so my vote goes nowhere except to give some party money, I guess. Which has its own merits, if I wasn't disgusted with all of them right now.

I am with you on our electoral system being broken; I wish we had a good 100 seats in the House set aside to get some proportional representation in there. But if wishes were fishes. And don't get me started on the Senate, either.

I've had a few issues with the Green party, too. but only two big big ones. (one of them is the headline at greenparty.ca, "May wins French Debate!" -- what a crock! but this runs /counter/ to the spirit of the Green party of raising the level of discourse in parliment, so I can forgive it).

all politicians do stupid, stupid things. Layton got pounded on by his supporters for trying to exclude May, and Layton then relented.

but maybe you can forgive Layton for it..?

yes, i speak as if your vote will do much more than 1.75$ ... i guess this is me simply trying to impose my passionate feeling that it's important to vote upon you. please, though, do what you feel is best in your conscience!

yeah. but keep wishing.
and maybe write to your MP on Oct 15th about putting pressure on the new Conservative gov't to consider proportional representation... I know I (finally) will!

Unfortunately, no, sorry, lol. I'm knitting and really want to make some progress on everyfreakingprojectIhaveinmyhead. Also, my ideas are extremely inarticulate. Sadly.

I want Duceppe for Prime Minister. I really, really do. Or May. I do not want the lumbering blue dinosaur to run, and increasing corporate taxes is frankly stupid, because it will absolutely cause businesses to leave faster and we do need the money; we're not all Alberta. Also, local small business that's situation-based? It can't leave, which makes us uncompetitive on a larger scale with the taxes.

Fizz.
