Have an absolutely fabulous time in italia - make sure your tour guide has frequent gelato stops! I'd say only take your phone if your plan has roaming included and you want to take the odd quick photo with it because it sounds unlikely you'll need it. I took mine and found it was completely useless because it only worked when connected to wifi, which negated the whole purpose of using whatsapp to organise my various friends etc. But I did also need it for some of my travel docs because my Interrail card was on it.

mmm, gelato. my sister is lactose intolerant and i am going to feel guilty eating gelato in front of her.
i did end up deciding to take my phone, mostly because what if something happens and i need it, and because i can get a pay-by-the-day international plan. fortunately there isn't anything on it that i can't print out.

Re: the lactose - it's worth asking at the gelateria because most of the fruity ones are sorbets (ie no milk, cream or egg) and fantastic.
