Does it get cold in Texas?

It's too darn cold. Simple as that.  When you wake up in the morning the the thermometer says -11 and then with the wind chill it feels like -31, it's too darn cold.  I think I will definitely work my ass off in efforts to win the position at Bioware Texas.  I cannot stand cold weather any more. Snow is pretty and all, but when it isn't plowed ( Read more... )

You would certainly stand out against Vallejo. There's only so many rippling, scantily-clad fantasy chicks one can stand before the genre starts to get old.

And you also stand out for using "molly coddle." I thought I was the only person under the age of 60 that did so.

Video game companies have some insanely intense competition for the graphical design positions. I have to say that if you're looking to get into the field eventually, it doesn't hurt to start seriously competing right now. It'll help you build up your skills and portfolio for later endeavors. I would not expect to win the current competition, however. It's tough, but the market's not an easy one.

I guess what I'm really looking for is a bit of a critique. Do you see anything in my work that really cries out for improvement? I've read all the guidelines and "what the professionals have to say." They spout off about schooling, when quite of few people who were interviewed just "got lucky." Not that I expect to just have something handed to me. Not by any means. The concept artist has got to be one of the most sought after positions, too. The market is not easy because it's so flooded with people trying to make it. I want to know if I stand out at all against the competition. I do want to improve, so any and all feedback is really helpful. The more specific the better. So if you think I wouldn't make the grade right now, what makes you think so? Is it an immediate impression? Or is it something you can't quite put your finger on?

Do you have a link to an online portfolio? I'm most certainly not a professional artist, but I do have enough art experience to critique a little here and there. Take no offense, you're certainly a good artist, but with how crazy the competition is for positions at companies like Bioware, Blizzard, Wizards of the Coast, etc., you've really got to stand head and shoulders above the competition. It's one of the reasons I'm not pursuing becoming a history professor anymore - I'm sure I've got the brains for it, but I'm lacking the Asian language skills and the "ignore everything else in your life to keep publishing obscure garbage" work ethic that is required of new and unestablished professors in the history trade.

The website isn't up yet, but it's in the works. I am aware of how intense the competition is. Which is why I want all the criticism I can get. So I can "fix" what's "wrong" and therefore improve. Maybe next time we come over to visit, I'll bring the real portfolio, and you can take a crack at it.
