That internet thing

Apr 17, 2008 23:05

Question for you folks: What internet based dealies are there where I can upload my pictures to? I am aware of deviant art, but I don't really want something so ... official. I just want something where I can put it up so I can then post it on LJ. I was under the impression it had to be previously uploaded in order to post it here.

i like flickr, but i don't have a comprehensive knowledge of what's out there, so i'm not sure if there are other things that are better. i see a lot of people using photobucket, too.

PBWiki (which is what I use for the Tower of Maura stuff) might be an option, but I don't know what the upload limit is for free accounts.

I will check on that, too. I think I'll probably go with what ever is easiest to work with.

Hmmm... LJ does have a scrapbook feature, where you can create a photo gallery, but it's only for paid users... and I'm guessing you probably have a free account.

photobucket is good. photoworks is where i went for color prints, but it also has free photo sharing. picasa is google's entry into photo sharing. it's pretty good from what i've seen. elfwoods and furaffinity and yerf and VCL are art hosting sites similar to devart. myspace and facebook have photosharing capabilities. photobucket is what i use, when i don't use lj's scrapbook feature or my other stes. otherwise, i'd go with picasa, probably. stay away from free webhostng sites like y!geocites, freewebs, or fortunecity.

Why not use deviantart? All kinds of differing levels of artists use that service, and it is a good means of getting people to see your work (plus some might want to buy or contract some). It's also easily accessible and at least somewhat professional, making it ideal for directing people to.

I just need a place to put pictures/photos so I can throw them up on LJ from time to time. I'm not really looking for a gallery setting for art pieces. Otherwise deviant art would be pretty easy.

It seems like what you need right now is exposure, first and foremost, and DA is good for that (and among the popular art hosting sites, the freest from genre-specific connotations (furry, fantasy, sci-fi, etc.) that might lead to people pigeonholing you). Marketing yourself is difficult, tricky, and ultimately uncertain. Up until you become really well-known your turnaround is pretty linear -- you have a 1-1 ratio of people hearing about you (likely from you) to people checking you out. The system of favorites and watchers and what-all means that as soon as somebody likes you and faves you, anyone going through that person's faves gallery has a chance of seeing you and checking out your work. In addition to that, DA is free, quick to set up, easy to use, and means that anyone who hears about you word-of-mouth just needs to remember a DA handle, not a whole web address ( ... )

Oops, left this up on my computer and posted it without seeing your reply to Eric. If you just want space for photos, I think flickr is great. My advice was more geared toward your goal of making a living from your art.
