A head of dark hair peeks around the corner. Bright violet eyes blink up at her friend, who merely looks bored.
“Rin…” The girl whines. Rin looks dispassionately down at her friend.
“What, Yuki?” Rin sighs.
Yuki pouts. “Rin, from the way you're acting, anyone would think that you hate me.” Rin pats Yuki on the head. “I'm not a child, Rin!” Yuki shrieks in protest.
“You still look like one,” Rin points out. Yuki flushes.
“J-Just because I'm not all grown up and pretty like you,” Yuki rants, before Rin slams a hand over her mouth.
“Shh!” She hisses, as footsteps echo down the hallway. As soon as the coast is clear, Rin releases Yuki. “I'm not 'all grown up and pretty,' Yuki,” Rin says sternly.
“Fine! Just because I'm not 'well-endowed' like Matsumoto-san is doesn't mean that you can call me a child!” Yuki frowns. Rin bursts out in laughter. Yuki stares helplessly at her, before dissolving into laughter herself.
Yuki is still a child, no matter how much she may want to deny it, Rin muses, She's not even taller than Hitsugaya-taicho, and that's saying something.
--
Rin spins around the practice field, avoiding Yuki's aggressive slashes and countering with her own jabs. Yuki's defense slips for the merest instant, and Rin's blade sinks into her shoulder. Yuki hisses in pain; flash stepping backwards until she is out of range. Rin smirks.
“I got first blood, Yuki-chan,” Rin taunts, and Yuki smiles venomously.
“That may be so,” Yuki whispers from behind her, “but I have the kill.” Yuki holds her zanpakutou against Rin's throat. “Yield,” Yuki commands.
Rin sighs. “I yield. I lost this round.” Yuki giggles, sitting down on the grass.
“That was a short match,” Yuki muses. Rin shrugs.
“How’s your shoulder?” Rin asks. Yuki brushes her fingers over it, wincing.
“It’s pretty deep,” Yuki frowns as pain shoots through her left arm.
“Gomen,” Rin apologizes. Yuki shakes her head.
“It was training, don’t worry about it.”
--
“Unohana-taicho!” Rin yells, dragging a protesting Yuki behind her. Unohana’s gentle face appears from the doorway.
“Ah, Rin-san, Yuki-san, what is wrong?” Unohana says gently.
“I wounded Yuki during training,” Rin explains. Yuki frowns.
“It’s nothing! I’m okay,” Yuki repeats. Unohana promptly ignores Yuki’s protests, beginning the process of healing her shoulder. Yuki yelps a few times during the process, but Unohana is done relatively quickly, and Yuki stretches her shoulder carefully. “Arigatou, Unohana-taicho.”
“Iie,” Unohana replies as Rin drags Yuki out.
“Hakuso Rinoli!” A familiar voice bellows out as soon as they leave the 4th Division. Rin freezes.
“Oh, shoot, it’s Abarai-fukutaicho,” Rin groans. “Run, Yuki, run!” Yuki laughs before dashing off after Rin.
--
“Why are you running from Abarai-san?” Yuki asks once they have reached a clearing near Yuki’s division.
“Because he always wants me to do his paperwork!” Rin complains. Yuki laughs.
“Nii-sama must not be very happy with him,” Yuki says.
Rin shakes her head. “No, taicho always threatens fukutaicho if he doesn’t do his paperwork, so fukutaicho tries to get me to do it.”
“And you don’t enjoy it?” Yuki asks. Rin stares at her.
“What, are you insane?”
“Last time I checked, no,” Yuki responds.
“Well, maybe you should get checked again,” Rin says.
“Seems like I should,” Yuki says seriously. They stare at each other and start to laugh again.
A sudden thump on Yuki’s head has her crying out once in pain as she turns to face the newcomer. “Taicho! That hurt, you know!” She scowls fiercely at the white-haired boy.
“So what, baka? Hurry up and get back to the barracks, we’re supposed to be having a meeting!” Hitsugaya glares back just as fiercely. Yuki gasps.
“Oh no! The meeting!” She cries. “See you later, Rin!” Yuki immediately grabs Hitsugaya’s hand and disappears.
“Typical Yuki,” Rin sighs, turning and heading towards the 6th Division barracks.
--
“Gomen nasai, gomen nasai!” Yuki apologizes profusely to the 10th squad. Matsumoto, the fukutaicho, ruffles Yuki’s hair.
“It’s okay, Yuki-chan!” Matsumoto says cheerfully. Yuki frowns.
“Matsumoto-san, please stop doing that!” Yuki protests.
“Enough. Now that everyone is here,” Hitsugaya interrupts, sending a cold glare in the direction of his vice-captain and third seat, “we shall begin.”
--
“Taicho?” Rin knocks on the door of the 6th Division office. At an answering grunt, she opens the door.
“What is it, Hakuso?” Kuchiki Byakuya says coldly. Rin doesn’t flinch, setting down a cup of tea on Byakuya’s desk.
“It’s getting late, taicho…” Rin says hesitantly.
“I know.” Byakuya responds. “Go home, Hakuso.”
“Hai, taicho,” Rin bows, closing the door behind her.
He never remembers…
--
“Rin!” Yuki exclaims, opening her window. Rin climbs in deftly, shutting the window behind her.
“Gomen, Yuki…” Rin says, “I had nowhere else to go.”
Yuki silently sets up an extra futon. “I know, Rin. I know.”
