The SM agent ushered them out of the taxi, and there they were, standing right in front of one of the most prominent producers in Korea - SM Entertainment. They were shown through a humongous lobby and into the elevator, followed closely all the while by the SM agent. When the elevator finally reached its destination, a short ding! signaled the opening of the elevator doors. They walked through a long hallway to a large, ornate wooden double door, which swung open to reveal the head of SM Entertainment - Lee Soo Man. Hyun-Ah immediately bowed low, and felt Han Geng at her side do the same.
“Now, now. No need to bow on ceremony. Please, take a seat.” Lee Soo Man’s voice boomed through the room. Hyun-Ah quickly told Han Geng what to do, and the two took seats on the chairs in front of Lee Soo Man’s desk. Lee Soo Man looked through his files, and lifted his head once Hyun-Ah and Han Geng were seated.
“I’m privileged to meet you, sir.” Hyun-Ah said respectfully. Lee Soo Man chuckled.
“You’re Park Hyun-Ah, correct?” Lee Soo Man asked. Hyun-Ah nodded. “I see you know how to speak Mandarin, so please be Han Geng’s temporary translator.” He said, smiling genially. “You were accepted as an actress, is that right? When you get older, I think I would also like you to be an MC. I also think that you would suit being a model for children’s clothing.” He continued, looking pleasantly at her. Hyun-Ah smiled, and Han Geng learned something. Her smile was breathtaking. It warmed your heart and made you want to smile and be happy as well. “Yes, you could definitely be a model.” Lee Soo Man chuckled.
“Thank you so much, sir.” Hyun-Ah bowed in her seat, a small smile curving her mouth. Han Geng squeezed her hand lightly, and she turned to him, explaining everything that had gone on in those past few minutes.
“Congratulations, mei mei. Please tell him I’m grateful that he has accepted me into his company.” Han Geng said, smiling at her happily.
Hyun-Ah relayed the message, adding on one of her own. “Sir, what are our accommodations? Does the company provide them, or do we find our own?” she asked.
“Your lodging is provided and paid for by SM Entertainment.” Lee Soo Man said. “Would you two prefer to stay together, or live apart?” he asked, reaching into one of his desk drawers.
“We would prefer to stay together, if convenient.” Was Hyun-Ah’s response, after asking Han Geng his opinion. Lee Soo Man deposited two keys into Han Geng’s hand.
“Those two keys are for the same house. This is the address,” he said, writing it down on a Post-It note.
“Thank you, sir.” Han Geng said hesitantly in broken Korean. Lee Soo Man smiled at the two before suddenly becoming serious.
“Han Geng, congratulations on making it through the auditions over 3000 others. I’m proud to say that you are an SM trainee.” Lee Soo Man said seriously, as Hyun-Ah translated to Han Geng. “Park Hyun-Ah, that goes for you too. You both have a lot of talent in your fields, please continue to work hard and succeed.” He finished, standing up. Han Geng and Hyun-Ah both stood up, bowing to the president of their new company. When it was appropriate to leave, they walked out of the huge building and into the bright sunlight.
“Good job, ge ge! You tried to speak Korean back there! Would you like me to teach you some Korean?” Hyun-Ah laughed. Han Geng nodded. They were back to the language he was fluent in, Mandarin. “Should we get a taxi to take us there…? Ge ge, do you have any Korean currency?” Hyun-Ah pondered, turning to Han Geng. Han Geng pulled out some Chinese coins, and Hyun-Ah reached into her wallet, finding American money.
“We can always exchange currencies, I suppose.” Han Geng said, looking around for anything that would give them an idea as to where they could find something like that. Hyun-Ah had disappeared from his side, gone to ask a bystander on the street for directions to their new house. Hyun-Ah came back after a few minutes, looking surprised.
“She said that this address is about 5 blocks down the street, it’s the large building on the left.” Hyun-Ah reported, already pulling Han Geng along. When they reached the building, Hyun-Ah froze. “This…is…a dormitory?” she questioned.
Han Geng double checked the address. “This is the right place. Let’s go in, mei mei.” He said, pulling the door open and holding it for her. Hyun-Ah thanked him, stepping in. There was a woman sitting in what seemed to be an office. Hyun-Ah walked over and knocked quietly on the door of the office.
“Um, excuse me? We’d like to know our room numbers, if you could help us with that?” Hyun-Ah said politely in Korean. The woman looked up.
“Oh, are you new residents?” she asked. Hyun-Ah nodded.
“We have a key, if that helps. I’m just not sure what room we’re in.” Hyun-Ah said, showing the woman the key. The woman took the key, matching the numbers on it to a room.
“Okay, you’re in room 400. SM trainees, right?” she said, handing Hyun-Ah back the key.
“Yes, are there other SM trainees staying here?” Hyun-Ah asked, taking the key and tucking it back into her pocket.
“I think there are. What are your names? I need to register this room under your names.” The woman asked, turning back to her computer.
“Park Hyun-Ah and Han Geng.” Hyun-Ah said. The woman typed it into the computer.
“Alright! That’s all. I’m Seo Eun Hee, and I manage this dorm. Just ask me if you have any questions.” She said, smiling. Hyun-Ah bowed.
“Thank you very much, Seo Eun Hee ssi.” She said.
“Mei mei, let’s go see our room, shall we?” Han Geng said, looking down at her. Hyun-Ah nodded.
“Room 400, room 400…” she muttered quietly. “Is there an elevator?” she asked herself, before noticing the shiny silver doors. She dragged her bags over to the elevator door, poking the buttons impatiently. To everyone else, it was comical. A ten year old, poking furiously at the up button as if it had done her a personal wrong.
Han Geng patiently pulled Hyun-Ah into the elevator, helping the girl whom he now realized had a very short attention span. “Mei mei, let’s go take a walk after we unpack.” Han Geng said. Hyun-Ah looked delighted at the prospect.
