“Hyun-Ah, you’re enrolled in school.” Han Geng told her one day. Hyun-Ah looked worried.
“Ge ge, do you think I can keep up?” How do I get there and back?” Hyun-Ah asked, frowning.
Han Geng smiled reassuringly. Of course you can keep up! I’ll pick you up and drop you off each day.” said Han Geng, ruffling Hyun-Ah’s hair.
“What about your school?” Hyun-Ah wondered, squirming out from under Han Geng’s hand.
“My school is close to yours.” Han Geng said. “I’ll take you there some other time.”
--
Hyun-Ah walked into the office half an hour early. Han Geng had walked her to school then continued onto his own school. Hyun-Ah had agreed to arrive early everyday so Han Geng could also get to school on time.
“Excuse me!” Hyun-Ah said, attempting to peer over the edge of the desk. A friendly looking lady looked up from her paperwork.
“Hello! Are you new?” she smiled. Hyun-Ah nodded. “What’s your name?” the woman asked patiently.
“Park Hyun-Ah.” The woman sat down again, rifling through her papers.
“Hyun-Ah… Hyun-Ah… Oh! Where were you born?” the woman asked.
“Seattle, Washington, in the US.” was the response. The receptionist (for that was what she was) nodded her head in approval.
“Good! Okay, Hyun-Ah, you’re in Ms. Chae’s class. That’s year 3, room 224.” Hyun-Ah was told. She ambled off to her classroom and sat down, waiting patiently.
--
“We have a new student, class!” Ms. Chae said, smiling. She beckoned Hyun-Ah to the front of the classroom. “Please introduce yourself.” Ms. Chae instructed Hyun-Ah.
“Hello! I am Park Hyun-Ah. I just moved here from Seattle, and I hope to be friends with everyone!” Hyun-Ah said, smiling around at the class. It was the smile that had won her the contract with SM Entertainment, it was no wonder that the grade three class looked stunned.
“Thank you, Hyun-Ah. Would you please sit back down in your seat?” Ms. Chae requested. Hyun-Ah did as she was told.
The rest of the class proceeded by quickly, and it was lunchtime quite soon. Hyun-Ah looked at the lunch that Han Geng had packed for her and smiled. It was fried rice.
“Hi! I’m Kim Junghwa! Nice to meet you!” a voice came suddenly. Hyun-Ah looked up. It was a girl with her black hair wispy and short, about to the middle of her neck. Her brown eyes radiated joy and Hyun-Ah couldn’t help but smile back. That was when she noticed another girl hiding behind Junghwa. This girl looked almost the same, but her brown eyes were timid, and her hair was longer, kept in two pigtails. To say the least, she was adorable. “This is Eunjae, my twin sister!” Junghwa proclaimed. Eunjae waved shyly, and Hyun-Ah waved back.
“Nice to meet you, Junghwa ssi, Eunjae ssi.” Hyun-Ah said politely. Junghwa made a face.
“Ew! Don’t call me Junghwa ssi, that sounds old!” she grimaced. “Jaekyung!” she called. “Get over here!” Another girl, this one with shoulder-length black hair and cheerful chocolate eyes, bounded over.
“What, Junghwa?” she demanded.
“Um… annyeong?” Hyun-Ah said hesitantly. Jaekyung turned and beamed.
“Oh, hi! I’m Jung Jaekyung. Welcome to Korea!” Jaekyung said happily. Hyun-Ah grinned. It looks like Korea was going to be a fun place.
--
It was almost March now, two months since Hyun-Ah’s arrival in Korea. She had best friends, and that was the group she was always with. After Junghwa discovered that Hyun-Ah waited for 10 to 15 minutes after school each day for Han Geng, she convinced Eunjae and Jaekyung to wait as well. Naturally, their parents waited as a result, although after a week, they realized that they should just come 15 minutes later.
--
The first time Junghwa saw Han Geng, she wondered how Hyun-Ah had met him. She knew that Han Geng wasn’t actually Hyun-Ah’s brother. She also know that they had met in Korea, and so she was surprised by the familial love and intimacy they displayed.
“Ge ge!” She heard Hyun-Ah call. Hyun-Ah got up and darted towards the boy walking towards them. He was tall and slim, with black hair that covered his forehead.
“Mei mei!” Han Geng called, holding out his arms. Junghwa watched Hyun-Ah run into his arms, watched Han Geng spin her around. Junghwa realized that they resembled each other so much, they could easily be mistaken for siblings by blood.
--
Junghwa worried a lot about Hyun-Ah. She knew the girl was frail and delicate. So when Junghwa saw the ball hit Hyun-Ah, she screamed Hyun-Ah’s name desperately.
--
Hyun-Ah had been waiting for Junghwa, Eunjae, and Jaekyung to catch up. She didn’t notice the boys playing soccer nearby, Junghwa realized, or else she wouldn’t have stopped there. Hyun-Ah waved frantically at them.
“Unni! Hurry-” Hyun-Ah’s words were cut off as the soccer ball slammed into the side of her head. Junghwa watched in what felt like slow motion as Hyun-Ah crumpled to the ground.
“HYUN-AH!” Junghwa screamed, mind awash with panic, sprinting towards her fallen friend. There was already a boy there, most likely the one who had kicked the ball. Junghwa reached Hyun-Ah and knelt down next to her unconscious friend, clutching Hyun-Ah’s left hand tightly. Panic raced through her body. What should I do what should I do what should I do? The boy picked Hyun-Ah up, cradled her in his arms, and Junghwa was pulled up, still clutching Hyun-Ah’s hand. Hyun-Ah’s body hung limply in his arms.
“I have to take her to the nurse’s office.” The boy said, fear underlying his words as he looked down at Hyun-Ah’s pale face. They began the seemingly long walk to the nurse, Eunjae and Jaekyung following silently behind.
--
Hyun-Ah slowly opened her eyes, groaning. There was a boy, who had been sitting next to her, and he immediately restrained her shoulders. Hyun-Ah was confused. Why did she have such a bad headache?
“My head hurts…” Hyun-Ah whimpered. The boy looked immensely guilty.
“I’m really sorry! I didn’t mean to hit you.” He repeated over and over. Hyun-Ah was confused at first, but slowly pieced together that this boy had somehow hit her head with something, and that was why she was lying here with a headache. She realized that he needed reassurance that it was okay, and so she smiled weakly up at him.
“It’s okay… really.” She whispered, closing her eyes tiredly. Junghwa, Eunjae, and Jaekyung came running over.
“Hyun-Ah! Hyun-Ah!” Jaekyung said frantically. Hyun-Ah opened her eyes.
“Jaekyung?” she said, puzzled.
“Are you okay, Hyun-Ah?” Eunjae asked quietly. Hyun-Ah nodded, but then realized that the movement hurt her head. So instead, she decided to go with a verbal confirmation.
“You had us really worried, Hyun-Ah…” Junghwa said, relieved that her friend seemed to be okay.
“Sorry to worry you, unni.” Hyun-Ah apologized. “I’m sorry to worry all of you.” She said again, looking around at her three friends.
“I need one of you four to stay here with Hyun-Ah.” A new voice interrupted. It was the nurse, and she was looking pleased that her patient was awake.
Immediately, the boy volunteered. “I’ll stay because it’s my fault she’s here in the first place.” He said, clearly still feeling guilty. Junghwa, Eunjae, and Jaekyung protested, but the nurse ignored them, speaking to Hyun-Ah instead.
“Hyun-Ah, you have a concussion, so try not to move around too much, okay?” the nurse said kindly. Hyun-Ah made a small noise of confirmation. “Make sure you wake her up every hour or so.” This was directed to the boy, who nodded solemnly.
“I will.” He said seriously. Hyun-Ah noticed that he looked older than she was, maybe by a few years. He had released her shoulders long ago. Hyun-Ah stretched out her right hand, slipping it into the boy’s left and tugging gently. He turned to look at her as the nurse left, a surprised look on his face.
“What’s your name?” Hyun-Ah said, her voice a little weak.
"Cho Kyuhyun.”
