Pairing: Dino x Tsuna

In the mafia world’s darkness, love was a myth, a story for foolis. Some talked about it, but very few believed in it. Dino hadn’t believed in it either. Not until that person entered his life and taught him otherwise.

The first time they had met, Dino had been in the boy’s room, nervous and wondering what sort of kid the Vongola’s heir candidate was. Then again, with Reborn as his tutor, there wasn’t room for much guessing. Still, there was something different in the kid - it didn’t have anything to do with the mafia future. Just… something that tugged Dino’s heart and made his veins flood with something strange, mixed with panic. So he did what he could to push the boy away. Mutual dislike would keep them both safe from each other.

“The way you present yourself is terrible. There’s no sense of anticipation. You don’t seem ambitious either… you look unlucky, too,” he had said. “Your disposition to be a boss is zero.” His men laughed behind the boy, Reborn chuckled, and the embarrassment was clear on Tsunayoshi’s face. It gave him a sick feeling, and before he had noticed, Dino was talking again.

“Don’t let the things I said get you down, Vongola’s 10th,” he had assured the other, inwardly frantic to make the boy relax. “Before I met Reborn, my capabilities to be a boss were nada, too.” He hadn’t understood the relief he had felt when the brunet didn’t look like a wounded child anymore. And so he ignored the feeling.

’My cute little brother,’ Dino had called Tsunayoshi, but even then the words had felt wrong in his mouth. Still, he had locked the insecurity in his heart and kept his thoughts strictly in check. Things had gone well - and even though Dino had worried himself sick during the Ring Battles, Tsuna had won and Dino was damn impressed, happy, and his heart fluttered when he thought about the younger boy. Pitiful, huh?

And then, Tsuna disappeared.

Well, later on he had been told about the trip to the future, but when it had happened, during the whole thing… Dino felt so worried, so worried that he thought that he’d lose his mind. Even now when Dino sits in his office, holding a glass full of Chteau Haut Brion Pessac-Lognan 1982, he shudders at the memories. He had been afraid. Scared. During that time he had finally come to accept that fuck, he couldn’t live without Tsuna in his life.

When they had met after that, Dino had felt like he was holding a hurricane inside his heart - he was so nervous, anxious yet energetic and just so happy that Tsuna was back, safe and sound. And when he had met the boy again, he had seen the difference, and if he hadn’t been already in love with the younger man, he would have fallen in love with him then. He still doesn’t remember who had greeted the other first - but he remembers clearly how incapable he had been of doing anything but just stare at Tsuna and think weakly that he was in love. He knew he had been shaking when he hugged Tsuna.

Power practically had crackled around the younger boy, tickling Dino’s skin, making him swallow thickly and hope for something he shouldn’t want from his little brother, who wasn’t so little anymore it seemed. The look in those brown eyes was sharper, harder, yet it was still full of kindness and compassion. Dino knew then that he was truly standing in front of the person who’ll be leading the Vongola one day.

Dino chuckles and looks at the wine he’s drinking, and compares it to the man he loves. This red 1982 vintage is still youthful and quite spectacular; holding its own against the best wines in the world - much like Tsuna could stand in the way of the strongest opponents with unwavering resolve. And just as the Chiavorone’s 10th boss enjoys the taste of this wine, he knows he’d enjoy the taste of the Vongola heir even more. But he’s yet to take the risk, and Dino knows that aside from Romario, only Reborn knows.

Loving Tsuna doesn’t hurt - it isn’t the pain his mother had told him about, it isn’t the filth some of his men laugh over, and it isn’t the shallow fooling he could see between teenagers nowadays. This love he has is deep as the sea, vast as the sky and solid as the earth he stands on. It’s sweeter than the sugar he puts in his coffee and more intoxicating than the wine he’s now drinking.

And he had thought that even if Tsuna won’t ever love him back, it would be alright. There’s no need for confessions and attempts that were doomed to fail, crumble and leave wounds.

“Coward,” the Arcobaleno had called him three days ago, when Dino finally admitted that he wouldn’t be doing anything about his feelings.

“I know,” he had said then.

“You wouldn’t even deserve him,” Reborn had snapped mockingly. “The others who want him fight for him, over him.” That statement had opened Dino’s eyes, and the Italian Mafioso doesn’t understand how he could have been so blind. Four out of six guardians were more than interested in Tsuna, and it seemed that even some of the Varia had set their eyes on the Vongola heir with less than honorable intentions.

’Can you stand by and watch it happen?’ a voice in the back of his mind asks and Dino shuts his eyes with a sigh. He knows that regardless of his attempts at being selfless, he doesn’t want anyone else to snatch Tsuna away. He imagines Tsuna’s slender, white arms wrapping around someone else, and he just doesn’t like it.

Could he take the risk? Won’t the boy turn away from him with disgust?

’You know he won’t,’ the demon on his shoulder whispers. ’And you can take care of him better than anybody else.’

But isn’t Dino too old? He’s seven years older than Tsuna, after all.

’Seven years mean nothing. If you leave the matters as they are now, Xanxus will eventually realize that he doesn’t want to kill as much as kiss Tsuna, and he’ll go for it - that guy is ruthless, selfish and has no morals whatsoever. And he’s nine years older than Tsuna,’ the demon says.

And Dino isn’t nearly as cool as he wishes to be - his clumsiness is legendary, and he knows that the number of embarrassments he had suffered in front of Tsuna was high… very high. So how could the younger of the two consider him a cool person anymore? But then again, Tsuna definitely wasn’t so shallow as to judge a person by how they appeared.

’Which basically means that anyone has a chance,’ the Chiavorone thinks miserably, and refills his glass. Drinking himself to oblivion sounded like a very appealing option to him. It’s getting late and he has agreed for a meeting the next day with Tsuna and the others. He wishes they could just ditch the rest, he dreams, imagines, a scene where he grabs Tsuna’s hand and drags him somewhere far away, where they have only each other to focus on.

’Maybe that would make him see me,’ Dino thinks, and then drinks the rest of his wine in one gulp, in a futile attempt to drown away his self-pity. It doesn’t work. It does, however, erase some of his useless pride that has been holding him back for so long. He realizes that he’s done with telling himself to stop, to wait and not to go. There’s something he wants and he is going to fight for it, not giving up till he gets it.

’I can’t wait for you to come, so I’m coming to you instead.’

THE END

I’ve read physics books that make more sense than this… O.O;;
