It's not as much a remake per se as it's a sequel (it focuses on Gin/Silver's son, Weed [insert marijuana jokes here]).

GDW is a'ight. Not incredibly stellar but not bad-- I watched the whole thing, meaning it interested me enough to pull through all twenty six episodes. I'm not exactly qualified to compare the two series since I've only seen 7 episodes of Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, but I can say that GDW has a different feel to it. The role of humans is minimized and instead the show focuses almost entirely on the dogs.

Given that it's relatively new, the animation in GDW is crisper and cleaner than the slighty dirtied cel look of GNG, although the quality of the animation in GDW can be meh at times. The characters go painfully off-model with undue frequency; I feel like the animal animation is better at times in GNG than GDW. Also, there were some really hokey plot devices in GDW (and large divergences from the manga). Music's pretty good, though. All in all, not too bad.
